However that does not seem to be a recognized variety. It's certainly inline with the 1776-1976 Bicentennial coins, with the law changed to allow production to begin in 1975 and pretty much minted flat out throughout the period.
When you complete your search please don't forget to post your final set result. Thanks and good luck.
Well here is my list of Kennedy's that I have. It looks like I only need the following: 1982-P no inits 1964 SMS (good luck to me on this one) 1981-S type II (clear 'S') 1998-S Matt Finish 2014-P High relief Clad 2014-D High relief Clad 2014-W 90% silver Rev Proof 2014-D 90% silver Unc and 2014-W Gold Proof (maybe someday) (I marked the sheets to the Left of the coin listed that I do have)
I believe it was in June of 1976 that the mint reinterpreted the authorizing law for the 40% bicentennial coins. They had interpreted it to mean they could strike up to 14,000,000 sets until July 4, '76 but sales were far lower. Then they suddenly came to believe they had to make 14 million sets. With no time left to make all these they ran off the remainder on high speed presses and the coins were unceremoniously dumped into 55 gallon steel drums for later assembly into sets. These poorly made coins were then manhandled so most acquired scratches. These sets remained on sale until 1981 but sales were very poor and there were even poorer repeat orders because the sets were so poor. When silver spiked in 1980 it was briefly possible to buy these sets at less than melt value but most of these were quickly melted. So now we have two very distinct versions of these coins; one that is attractive and well made (though usually tarnished) and one that was poorly made, unattractive, and not often tarnished. There's another big difference between them; the high speed coins are far scarcer.
Ok, so I hear(read) that the 1975-S is considered to be a 'type II' coin. My question is, is there any difference between the 1976 coins. If I were to have a 1975 version - how would I tell the difference? You state that the '1975' is a 40% coin, but I found a PCGS graded '1975 proof coin' but it being a CLAD coin. check out this eBay listing, 3rd picture shows the grading.. https://www.ebay.com/itm/313503343438?hash=item48fe41634e:g:51YAAOSwSRhg8Jep
An update to this thread, I now have all the missing Halves I listed, the last one (the 98 matte is in the mail, when it comes in, I'll post up the new Dansco page I had to add to my album. (with the new coins in it)
Well Looking over my Kennedy Dansco albums, and a little research (help from a few of you here), I found that I was missing a lot of special issue coins the I could have had in these albums. So I purchased 2 more blank pages for the 8167 album and labeled it for the additional coins. I also couldn't stand the blank hole for the 2021 S Silver Proof (I did have it but it was an NGC PF 69 slabbed coin). So I went and bought another one I could break out. I found another NGC slabbed coin, but it was a PF 70! I decided to keep the 70 in its slab and break out the 69 for the album. So here are my updated 3 pages to my 8167 Dansco album. A few of the new coins are also slabbed, and I intend to keep them that way until I can send them off to PCGS to re-holder them.
