it seems that the modern commems were not popular these days. thus the later commems produced became fewer mintage and mostly its prices sour. the mintage as high as 6 millions plus and as low as 15,000 + only. recently, the marine and john marshall moved up to few hundred thousands pieces.

I believe that the American Buffalo sold out quick and gained in value sharply.

So far history has repeated itself twice when it comes to US commems. The first time occurred with what we call Early Commems 1892 - 1954. The mint just kept on producing them in such numbers that eventuall the collecting public became tired of them. Now we have the Modern Commems. They were quite popular until 1996 when the mint again produced them in such numbers that the public grew tired of them. In the late '90's & 2000 you could barely give the things away. Then in 2001 the Buffalo dollar created an upsurge in popularity again. Or rather I should say it's rapid increase in value did.

I fear a third time is on the horizon.

No one imagined any circulation issues could be desirable but it was this attitude
which led to the scarcity of 1983 quarters in unc. They still aren't especially de-
sirable considering most are unattractive and nice specimens are very scarce yet
bring only $50 or $100. This amazes many people who can't imagine collecting
pocket change. There are numerous such coins in very short supply but they are
    not well known.

    unwanted and ugly coins

some of the future unwanted or ugly coins like the presidential series on a dollar coin. and the wife of the president on a gold coin. i mean some president and his wife might not be famous. those coins can become another rare and key date and the price of those coins can be a good investment.

Or they were truely disliked or hated such that people would melt the coins down just to erase their image ;)

I have to agree with the ocean in view nickel.
I have a parking lot cleaning service and so far I have rolled almost five dollars in OIV nickels. I don't find that many cents in a 6 month period. I am wondering if people think they are not a US coin?
I found the same thing when the "Golden" dollar came out, and Walmart was really pushing them. I watched one night as a lady threw them down on the parking lot. $4 the easy way!!!

Here is an interesting story about an 1806 holed Bust Half (click link below).

A collector of holed coins wore it on his "holed coin vest" for years then sold it for $40. The buyer put it on Ebay and it hammered for $1,800. Turns out the coin was a new variety, and the Ebay buyer was credited with discovering it!! Since the variety is (currently) unique, the coin is likely worth five figures, hole and all!!
