I also think it was formed by a struck through piece of string, the old brown kind made from hemp.

With the rim also affected you have at least narrowed it down to the time of striking ie, struck through, or PMD, perhaps an ornate loop of chain soldered to the coin and then attached to a piece of fine card as a token of thanks or appreciation with a wonderful italic script

I think it got a metal eating virus, and it slowly ate away the flesh of the coin!
Thank you soooo much for doing this contest @lordmarcovan!

I'll bet 3 cents that its welding damage from its prior life as a brooch or some other piece of jewelry.

The 9-y.o. perspective is respected here, and was even partially suggested in Rule 2. :p

Outlandish and amusing scenarios aside, that’s my take on the matter as well. Welding/soldering/braising. Likely jewelry. Perhaps to a link of chain.

Correction: brazing. “Braising” involves the cooking of meat. I guess my steak craving has influenced my spelling today. ;)

Admit it Rob. You were messing around trying to make a Hobo 3 cent piece and it just didn't work out right.

I literally did make a 3cN love token one time, for a friend, @oreville. I came across a nickel 3c piece that had had its obverse smoothed off, to prep it for a love token, but it never got finished back in the 19th century. The obverse side was left totally blank while the reverse (Roman numeral) side was intact. I took it to a jeweler and had them engrave his initials on it.

let’s give the coin credit for possibly deflecting a bullet and thus saved the life of the soldier carrying it.

Aliens? Aliens??? And you think I'm koo-koo?

Crazy like a 2 year old, maybe. Sorry @lordmarcovan for hijacking this awesome contest thread, it's really @SensibleSal66's fault for picking on me, as we can all see. Maybe these can be moved to some sort if a "battle royalle" thread? Thank you.
Thanks again for such an amazing contest, and thanks @SensibleSal66 for trying to ruin it for me, ya big meanie ;)
