I have this 1964 Proof Quarter with this stain above Washington's head.. is this something that can be removed?
It is something that can be dealt with, but if I were you I would buy another set. They are fairly cheap.
Dips should only be used by those that know how to correctly use them. It is too easy to ruin a coin especially when toning is a natural occurance on coins.
It's just a stand alone quarter, not part of a set.. was just wondering if it was something that would come off with acetone or soap and water or baking soda etc or if I should just replace it with a better one.. probably only cost about 7 or 8 dollars so wasn't sure if I should try and remove it or not
Acetone will only work if the deposit on the coin is organic in nature. It will not have any effect on toning. Anything caustic such as baking soda will damage the coins surface permanently
I would replace it with a better one. probably find a full set for around 20 if you look hard enough. I have found three accented hair sets in antique shops for under 15. Soap and water, baking soda? These are definite no no's on coins. Only if you want to ruin the surfaces of the coin or possibly leave a worse residue on the surface with soap. Acetone removes organic residues, and will not touch any type of toning.
