I just picked up an 2009 Liberty Penney with what looks like the letters "VDE "or "VDB" at the edge of Lincoln's left shoulder. What do these letters represent. Sorry no pic. camara down.
I am going over all my coins now, it will take a several days if not a couple of weeks with work in all to go through but just looking at the few on my desk today the State Quarters have a stamp mark on them too at the base of Wasingtons neck towards his ponytail. I can't make out what the mark reads. Maybe an artist Mark. (?) The rear of the newer Lincolin penny (Log Cabin) also has I am guessing the artist mark. On the one I have I can see on the left "RM" and on the rt. "JL."
......the red book is an excellent book for new and veteran collectors. i suggest getting a red book and checking it out. it has a ton of information that will help answer a lot of questions. i'm only trying to be helpful. please forgive me if this comes across as criticism, it isn't meant to be. good luck!
If you find a good website on coins, chances are that you'll find the Designer of obverses and reverses of all U.S. coins. Somewhere on that side of the coin, you will usually find initials of the designer. And like Grizz stated, the Redbook is an excellent place to find this information, so get one if you don't already own it.
If you are talking to me, I am such a virgin (newbie) in all of this I still squeak when I walk. Any advice is very much appreciated. Grizz wasn't being critical, he was giving you good advice. I learned a LOT after buying my first Ref Book. You can get it at a library, I assume, also. Many coins have markings of the designer, including the Cent. Joe
