Well, Im new to the collecting businness. My only coin i have is a 1889 Morgan Silver Dollar-CC. My grandfather gave it to me for Christmas. wish i knew how to post pictures..
Hopefully not. Im looking to add to my collection already.. ha i feel as if i dont belong seeing all of these rare coins... Although i did just buy a set of 1957 5$, $2, and $1 federal reserve bills.
What a great review of nice coins bought in 2009! I was fortunate to be able to make a lot of good coin purchases in 2009 too. Some of them were Norwegian coins, some ancient coins, and some US coins for my US type set, a.o. a nice half dollar from 1838. If I'm to pick one single coin, I'd have to pick this one, though. A denarius struck by a millitary mint in North Africa, ca. 46 BC. My first Julius Caesar coin, and a nice one too.
I only bought 6 or 8 coins last year. Trying to stay focused on finishing a proof type set started many years ago. I'm down to 1 or 2 coins to finish. Can't really decide what's next. It's great to reach a long term goal but sad at the same time. This was my favorite for the year. PCGS PR63.
Svessien - very interesting! Can you describe who is riding the back of the person on the reverse? I was going to say a women, but then the figure has a beard! I'm sure there must be some allegorical reason for how it is represented.
Did you ever read The Aeneid in high school? The reverse shows Aeneas carrying his father, Anchises, and the household gods from the burning city of Troy. The Romans traced their lineage back to him (he's the father of Rhea Silvia, the mother of Romulus and Remus). I really want one of these coins, but I think that its way overpriced because of its association to Julius Caesar.
My first half cent... and the coolest woody I've ever seen,,, bands are BLUE !,, pic captures some of the blue color, maybe 20%,,, most striking woody I've ever seen...
More about the moment than the coins...every month or two our coin club has an auction, and normally things go for a pretty decent price. Members bring items they want to sell, and buy, and the coin club gets 10% (a nice little way to generate revenue). So at a recent auction, I was sitting in back, and the auctioneer held up this state quarter book, said that it had 110 quarters in uncirculated condition (all states P & D plus districts P & D), and started bidding off at $25. Bidding was slow, and stopped at $27. I kept trying to figure out was was wrong with the picture, and at "going twice" I bid $28. I won the item for $28, and am still shaking my head. So the best coin(s) of the year so far for me is more about the moment!
