As already stated, we see many new members that make one or two posts and then are never heard from again, but some leave because they are put down or made fun of. Just saying.

The average life span is about 10 minutes before someone calls them a troll.

And then we generally get nasty.

I am not denying this is the case for several of the "new members." Still, I like to try to be optimistic and think maybe they are just reading to learn. Maybe they are more like me, being the anti-socialite, but still want to belong to community of their interests. It takes a lot of courage and vulnerability to post an opinion or coin and have it critiqued by members with much more experience. Heck, I have been a member for 12 years and only have a little over 1100 posts because of such trepidations.

But then again, there are those who post a quick "what is it worth" and are gone forever.

Or, some people such as myself, joined to find a source of decent information. When a question is asked and the answer is we can't tell you because we do not want to educate the counterfeiters, one has to take pause. For me, education has always been about questions. If they are spurned, well ... My interest is mainly ancients and medievals , largely because of the artwork, especially the coins that some put down as the work of "barbarians". I guess I owe that in part to Andre Malraux's "The Voices of Silence" , 1953, which had blown up images of ancient coins mixed in with other pictures of fine art. At any rate, if I disappear, it is probably because I have 'dropped off of the face of the earth' again, not because of my inability to get rich, which I am quite good at.

  9. I read this forum for years (years) before registering.

Sometimes on here I see a New-bee ask a "very simple and obvious question" (to us that have collected for 40+ years) and the newbee gets ripped up about "why don't you research or look it up yourself." That might discourage a future collector or at least chase away a New CT member. I give away coins and sometimes silver certificates $1.00 here to get younger folks to be interested and possibly start collections. Please be patient even with "dumb questions" friends, they have honest questions sometimes.

Same it took me months of just being a guest not registered snooping around to all of a sudden.joined and being more into the community like I am now for a little over a year.

Then there are the ones that are either trolls or for some other legitimate reason wind up on my Ignore list.

Lots of good information in older threads as well.

I didn't see the post you refer to. I will say we have had many people over the years that come and ask a lot of questions about quite a few fakes, wanting to know in detail everything that makes them fake. It sure feels like they are trying to learn how to make better fakes. That is why we might have been leery sir. I can post a coin and have everyone's full input, since they know I am not doing that, (I hope). Maybe that explains a situation I unfortunately did not see.

A lot of the regulars kicked my butt on my first member post last year, I'd been lurking for some years, and I love you guys, but I would note that there is pretty clearly a... shall we say, lack of patience, among some of the regulars. ;) Which is part of the charm, of course, but it can be rather intimidating.

fully agree, some are patient and knowledgeable and some are blunt and abrasive and have a tendency to berate if a T isn't crossed or an opinion is different. Some kind and good people in here, you know who you are.

  17. As I mentioned, I spent at least a year lurking. In that year, I read most of the sub forums and made extensive (extensive) use of the search function to read about specific topics of interest. I still search for something at least once daily.

I don’t think most new folks do this. What I see are a flood of requests for basic info and coin IDs, sometimes without even a simple thank you.

I imagine the seasoned users here tire of this.

I was born in the 50"S before bitcoin, as far as newbies I remember when I joined just a short time ago 2012 came on here and mouthed off like I do and the MODS straightened me out with some emails to me. So I took the advice and found out how serious the collectors were on here. I am still hanging around some just enough to get Under Mpcusa skin...

After lurking a couple years I joined the fun. On about my third post my Jefferson CUD was deemed ‘solder’ although the weakness on the reverse was clear.
We do pretty good with the marginal info and pictures from newbies but sometimes not so much. Turns out we’re all human

I agree. One, photos can only do so much. Second, because so many non-errors and fake coins get posted, people get leery of posting something might be real here. Third, you have to know who is who here. Some members with little expertise love to give their opinion, but real experts might be busy at the moment.

well also remember most people have no clue on coins and they hear about these coins that sell for major $$$$ and they want a piece of the action

many think coins is a way to making major $ and easy street but little do they know or care to know coins are not all that easy and they sure don't make you rich unless you have very deep pockets

being in the coin hobby is hard work, lots of research and willing to listen to others
