At least to me it is. Early this year I posted a set of Mercury Dimes I put together from circulation, only buying a few. I had a second Whitman’s Mercury Dime album do I went through some of my junk silver dimes.

There are 77 holes in the album and I filled 39 of them, just a half a hair over half of them. In unpacking some of those boxes I have with coins, I ran across a smaller box, 7 x 7 x 3. I knew I had it but here’s the story.

Back in 2012 when silver was around $11-$12 an ounce I purchased a some amount of coins. I never really looked at them, until today. He only wanted junk silver pricing and he used plastic sandwich bags.

War Nickels in one bag, Quartets in another. The same with halves except 40 and 90% in different bags. Mercs in one bag and Roosevelt’s in another. I filled the Roosevelt album as I only needed 3 coins. I’ll post that later but the Mercury Dimes really were a big surprise. I’m still thrilled.

77 coins fill the album and I had 39 of them. I spent the last 3 1/2 hours looking at Mercury Dimes. I double checked the dates and mint marks. And this is the result. Only 1 to buy.

I’m sure you can guess it’s the 1916-D but there were all the semi-key dates twice over along with a few key and semi-key dates from other denominations. I’ll be on the lookout for a lower but nice clean one.

Even if there weren’t any semi-keys, melt for $11-12 an oz is an amazing deal considering that it sells for 3x nowadays. :D

That would be sweet. I can pick up an AG-3 for a little over $300 but I’m patient. And I have a full set already. In going the coins I bought I had 2 1916’s and 3 1916-S ones but no D. I was hoping but I’m good. Just thrilled at what I did find and filling this as pictured.

Unbelievable story indeed, although knowing how lucky you are makes it a bit more believable.
    Great stuff!

Nice!!! I'm working on Mercs too, but you are way further along than I am in completing the collection. I have 23 more to go. Slowly but surely, I'll do it! I'll be happy to get a 1921 or 1921-D but the 1916-D will probably be forever out of my price range. 1921 was my dad's birth year...and all but the cent, nickel, and Morgan dollar are tough.

Save up and get a low priced one, $300-$400 depending when, where and condition. I always buy the key and semi keys dates first. It’s easier to complete the collection but this album was different.
