Todd at BluCC has done a great job of imaging a portion of my collection over the last few months (also check out the amazing photos he took of a major collection of IHC's for Rick Snow).

I paste in a 1923-S Buffalo and a 1927-D Buffalo, both PCGS MS65. Which do you like better and why? As always, thanks for the comments. It is always interesting to see others' thoughts.

    First, the 23-S:

Love them both! The golden toning is superb and both are well struck. Sorry, I cannot choose between them.

Personally, I think the 23-S should have graded higher. Thats a fully graded 65 and I can't see why it did not make a 66.

Tough call; overall, I like the 23-S better. I love that champagne-gold color in Buffalos. That was the tie breaker for me.

On both coins, it seemed there was some muddiness in E PLURIBUS UNUM; I couldn't tell if that was worn dies, soft strike, or it was slightly out of focus.

In any case, they're both nice. Congrats !

I like the '23-S, imo, the light toning gives it great eye appeal. Nice coins!

IMHO, the 23-S is a much better strike than the 27-D.

I think the 23-S as well, but if you notice it is also the one with the CAC sticker.

There is just more to it, plus any "S" find was enjoyable in my neck of the woods.

    Both beautiful. Thanks for sharing.

    I agree

The 23 S looks like it has a line running through the Chief's lips. Could this have kept it from a 66?

    Both beautiful coins!

Like just about everyone else, I prefer the 23-S, though it is a close call. The coloration on it is just enough to push it above the 27-D. Either way, you've got some lovely coins! :)

23-S for strike and toning! Both are wonderful.

I think it's unanimous! The 23-S is my preference. It looks to have a better strike, and S-mint Buffaloes from the 20's are as good as it gets!

Really liking that 23-S though both are great, with huge eye appeal.
I'm also curious about the rim on the reverse of the 27-D above "AMERICA" missing? off-center? cut-off in pics by the slab?

The 23-s seems to have the ty in liberty and also part of the US logo running into the rims, on bust halves that is a sign of die wear, but I also see a bit more detail in the chief and the buffalo then in the 27d, also the tail on the 27 d seems to be overlapping the rim, and the rim looks finned about 1-3 oclock, Not an expert on these, I only have 5 or 6 of them in the collection. I sold a few at work for a dollar each, oddly enough the guys at work snatched them up.

If I was forced to chose, I would go with the 1923-S. It has a really neat golden toning, slightly more detail on both the obverse and reverse and the extra appeal of being minted in San Francisco.

Panther is right they are both beautifuf , but I'll go with the '23-S , the color is great and it's better struck ,IMO , then the '27-D .

Both are nice coins, but the 23-S looks nicer to me. I love the toning on it.

    23s!

I am going with the crowd here - I love the 23S. The toning is spectacular. What great photos -- nice enough to frame and matte for an office. Thanks for sharing them. They do make my buffalos look like cows! LOL!
