It’s a 1957-D Franklin Half from the Omaha Bank Hoard. PCGS gave it a grade of MS64FBL. Most of the damage is on the case but those marks behind his head are on the coin. I believe it was given a bump in grade because of it being labeled the Omaha Bank Hoard. The bell lines are all present but you need a loop and the light must be right. Thoughts? Comments?
Take away the (what looks like a) significant gouge in the upper cheek below the eye and I'd stay with 64, but with that plus others/all together...no way...better a 63. Still a nice half.
Lots of tiny marks, behind his head, on the cheek, by his eye, under ear, on forehead and more. I’m in the 63 camp.
I hate to seem wishy-washy, and I don't really know the Franklin series, but I voted maybe. I can see it as a low-end 64 or a high-end 63 and either one feels OK to me. I don't know why PCGS would give it an upward bump for being an Omaha Bank Hoard coin unless there is some market benefit that makes these coins actually more desirable to the collector community.
It’s a case of grading the significance of the coin and or it’s story and submitter. Think along the lines of the Farouk 1933 $20 Saint, got a 65 grade but otherwise would probably get a details AU-55.
