How big is it? Looks like a groundhog jaw bone. You can see that it had strong jaw muscles and the front teeth were prominent and isolated.

    How big is it?

Hmm ya thats certainly a possibility, ill have to do an image search of groundhogs and see how much of a resemblance there is, I've had this jawbone for probably 20 years now and I've always been curious what it belonged to. The upper jawbone of a groundhog is an enticing theory. Here's an image with quarter for scale..

Lower jawbone of a rodent of some sort is my guess.

@lordmarcovan Sorry to rehash an old post but I just learned some very heartwarming news today. My 5 y/o grandson had his very first show and tell yesterday. He asked his dad, my son, if he could bring the fossil that Pop Pop gave him. My son said of course.

They went over all the details for his presentation.

    Orthoceras, 2" to 2.5" 'polished'
    300-400 million years old
Ancestor to the modern day squid
Given to him by his Pop Pop

Gotta tell you, my heart swelled when they told me this. He's my boy!!! First born grandchild.

This is a web picture of one similar to his. I haven't taken a picture of his yet.

Grandkids are special, aren't they? I've got three myself, twin boys(13) and a girl(10). They call me Paw-Paw.

Special? Beyond any preconceived notion I could possibly have had going into the whole grandparent thing. When we pull up to the their home and see the two boys (5 & 1.5 y/o) standing in the open front door pointing at us and start jumping up and down with sheer joy and excitement my heart goes a flutter. There is absolutely nothing else like it.

We did just that yesterday. We pulled into the driveway, the older one comes running full tilt at me, I hunker down, spread my arms and he flies into my arms and squeezes me with such love it is incredible. Then he whispers into my ear, during that first embrace, 'Pop Pop, I've missed you so much'.

I like the name Paw-Paw. It sounds like you've been blessed like we have. Congrats.

Oh, and I can't forget my daughters little princess. She's coming up on her first birthday. My daughter was in labor on Thanksgiving Day last year. Little baby girl was born the day after. So three in total for us so far. :)

It's a lower jawbone. Now that you gave the scale, I'm pretty sure it's a groundhog because of the size. Did you get it in Massachusetts?

Oh no kidding, I always assumed it was an upper and the protrusion was its snout. Then again I'm no biology expert. Yes I found it in MA. My aunt has a big old backyard with woods in the back, found it right about where the woods meet the lawn.

    Then I'm pretty sure it's a woodchuck/groundhog.
The front teeth are missing. Flip it around so the grinding teeth are pointing up and I think you'll see what I mean.

Is that your Type album? I like the Littleton green.

I took the pic on one of my folders.. the 20th century type coins folder to be exact. But the 19th century type folder is also of the forest green Littleton variety. They definitely make quality products, they're right up in NH as well so its nice to support a (somewhat) local business in the process. The 19th century type album is gonna be a tough endeavor but at the same time it's gonna be a lot of fun to watch it (sloooowly) come together!

Of course. I should have recognized by the “dimples’ that that one was a folder, not a bookshelf album. But yeah, Littleton sells nice albums and folders.

I won’t do business with them on coins because of their nosebleed pricing structure (though I do like to buy Littleton-packaged stuff on the secondary market). But aside from pricing, everything else about them is professional and good quality. (And the albums aren’t so bad, pricewise.)

Ditto. Because I bought a bunch of folders from them online a few years back they would send me their catalog seemingly every other week. I don't think there was a good deal to be had on a single coin in that publication. I can't say that I minded though, it was fun to peruse through and look at all the nice coins, with top of the line photography to boot. Never did buy a coin from them though.. I'm not one to pat myself on the back but I'd say that was a wise decision on my part. Then again I was also forewarned by CT members that they gouged ya on any and every coin in their inventory. I must say that I am a fan of their supplies though. I find that their albums and folders are much more uniform when it comes to dates than Whitman, which is one of my big pet peeves. For example, if memory serves the way Whitman does their cent folders they have a folder that encompasses the years 1941-74 or thereabouts. The fact that they intersperse wheats with memorials puts me off. Littleton is pretty good in that regard.
