I have been trying to do my duty of spending and circulating the $500 I received in Sacagawea dollar coins. One thing I picked up off the back was that cashiers do not seem to like anything at or above $10 in coins.

I feel weird giving the gas guy $15 or $20 in coins so I haven't done it.

Working at McDonalds, I am open to receiving any kind of change. In fact, one time i was given a Half Dollar Roll. That was a ten minutes well spent searching that roll.

Interesting, so chances are I can pay at McDonalds with a $25 Sacagawea roll?

You would have to rip the paper open and physically count the coins right then and there correct?

I used $10 once when they first came out. They were happy to get them so they could give them to customers. Of course they were saving a couple for some youngster who was always checking to with them trying get some.

Yes, I would have to count it. You could open that roll and put 10 quarters in the middle and save at least $8.00, I've seen it all.

I spend a few rolls of dollars and some halves when I can get them every month. The most I've ever spent on one purchase would be in the 5 or 6 range. I do use them for tips as well. A lot of the wait folks like them.

If you're eating $25 worth of food from McDonalds at one time, you've got bigger problems than how to pay for it. Lol, just a little comment about how unhealthy McDonalds is.

statequarterguy, I like your sense of humor :)

If I'm out with the family for some fast food, I'm going to spend close to that if not more.

At Christmas I purchased $200 in gift certificates using $1 coins at a local Walgreens. I fel confident that, although I did my part, the coins I spent are now comfortably resting in either some bank vault waiting to go back to the Federal Reserve ro that they are already back at the Federal Reserve.

The Direct Ship program is a mis-guided venture put on by the US Mint that only benefits coin collectors.

People actually like thge small dollar coins and the ONLY reason these do not circulate is that Merchants, both big and small, refuse to give them out as change for a $5, $10, or $20 purchase.

Merchants NEVER order these in place of paper dollars. If they did, then the coins would circulate.

I used 4 rolls and bought a bunch of coins down at the local coin shop once. They weren't all too disappointed because they didn't have the rolls on hand and they were able to keep the rolls back for other customers. Plus, using coins to buy coins wasn't as awkward as maybe using a roll to buy dinner at the local pizza joint. I look forward to receiving my box of sacs in any day now. I usually use them to pay for my parking in the parking garage that I use every day. I have some parking people who cant wait for me to leave because they know they are going to get some golden dollars. I spend at least $4 per day and maybe more if I leave my place of work during the day. Just trying to do my part. :)

I paid for a $16 + change purchase at WallMart with 17 dollar coins. The cashier laughed, but counted them and took them. I have no idea whether they gave them out as change though....

Any register workers should take brief training on current odd denomination issues.

"This is Sacagawea Coin. It is worth one dollar and is legal us tender"
"This is a Kennedy Half Dollar. It is worth 50 ents and is legal us tender"
"These are Presidential Dollars. They worth one dollar each and are legal us tender"

It would really make transactions much less stressful for everyone.

Tell me about this transaction at Walgreens. Did you hand the cashier rolls and then they ripped each one of them open and count each coin individually? And they did this for all 200 coins without giving you any attitude?

As I said earlier, I am getting to the point that I'm getting very self-conscious about handing over more than 10 of these babies.

    This was before small dollars

This was before small dollars. They were in a coffee can so I didn't really count them.

I had a coffee can of money, he claimed his three boxes contained most of the rest of the Harley. (Frame & engine block + the rims were seperate)

It was kinnda a lb to lb deal. but we both ended up happy.

I gave the clerk 9 rolls with no attitude on her part at all. I do not recall if even one roll was opened.

When I do spend dollar coins, I never get attitude and the coins are ALWAYS well received by the clerks.

I am considering buying a $200 money order at the post office. Will they simply take the money or will they give me 'the look'?

    Hello all:

In Canada I once paid for a purchase with $30 dollars worth of Loonies. The store clerk took them too, because he needed them.
