If anything, maybe we just need a reasonably priced 'authentication service'. Fake or authentic is not subjective so long as you have the skills to make the determination. Still don't have much use for someone assigning their opinion of which of 42+ different 'grades' should be attached to a note.
As MPCUSA put it, knowledge is key. In about 2003, Carlson Chambliss made full color copies of the notes in his MPC collection which is the entire set including 691 and 701. Hundreds, if not thousands, of sets were printed. At one time, Krause Publications gave them away with subscriptions to BNR. They are all marked COPY on the back as required by the Hobby Protection Act. Every type of note has the same serial number which is how I could tell the 681 $20.00 note is a copy. Its number matches the Chambliss copies. Does everyone know this? No. But anyone who has the current MPC catalog should know this because the information is in it. Anyone spending serious money on MPC without reading the MPC catalog is needlessly taking a risk.
Not trying to derail the thread or anything, but to be clear, I never questioned the value of authentication when it comes to coins or banknotes where it might be questionable (especially for something of high value if genuine and routinely faked). In such cases I don't deny the value of expert analysis (something is either real or it isn't; that's a matter of fact, not opinion, and thus isn't subjective). I would never buy a raw trade dollar for example, because they're faked way too often. What I think is a waste of money is paying someone for grading, which is purely a matter of subjective opinion.
Every body,s opinion is valued here, And thanks for your clarification on The authentication process and the use of an expert to make that Determination, As far as grading, I think i would still have to trust an Expert on that as well, Though mistakes can be made, I think they Would make alot less of them, Thats for sure then the avg joe!
DIY is the best...the more information out there provided to us in a hobby the better informed we can be and the less we need to pay for the subjective opinion of a TPG. You know how the old saying goes... Pay a TPG money to lock your coin away in cheap plastic and put an opinion on it...or teach a person to judge these things for themselves and use the money on more coins and notes. TPGs are like any other company making money off of peoples fears. Fakes and the fear of fakes and the uncertainty people have in their own knowledge and ability (or the refusal to learn) is their bread and butter. They dont WANT you to learn about the hobby you are spending hard earned money to pursue. Fakes are to TPGs what computer virus is to virus protection software makers. They dont want to get rid of them, they need to always be around and the fear of them must also be there...and the lack of easily obtained instruction. They want it to seem like this is so difficult to do that you dont even try. I have heard a person call it talent...it isnt...its learned and can be learned by anyone.
Drusus I respectfully dissagree. I dont think TPG company's want to have fakes around let alone need them. Or that they dont want you to learn about your coins/currency. Many of the people that buy graded coins are some of the most knowledgable people in the industry. And as for the fakes it's problem for them too as they are faking their holders too.
What would a anti-virus company do (billion dollar industry) if a person were to develop a system impervious to hacks? You dont need their service. They need the virus makers and the threat and fear of a virus or they serve no purpose. What would a security alarm company do if there were no crime or if people secured their own homes to eliminate the need? What would a TPG do if there were no fakes and collectors were well verse in judging the condition of the coins they buy? They need this fear...without it...they serve no purpose. What purpose does a slab serve if people were able to make reasonable sound judgements about the grade of their own coins, rejected the needless expanded grading system, could catagorize a coin as VF, XF, FDC, etc... and if there were no fakes to cause people fear when buying expensive coins?
Your anology's are apples and oranges. TPG'ers are not only for fakes but grades too. And if there were no virus's or no crime people would still fear for them and purchase them. Look at what happened during Y2K not one computer crashed but sooo much money was spent on fixing what did not and would not happen. As for: "What purpose does a slab serve if people were able to make reasonable sound judgements about the grade of their own coins" Well it's not a perfect world and that will never happen. There willl always be people learning to grade their coins as people die, enter the hobby, new coins come out, variations come out, ect...there will always be a need. Then there are the people that dont get to see their stuff in hand but on the net or mail order. I'm not a big TPG'er type of guy I'm just pointing out that they have their merits and to not dismiss them 100% just 50% maybe
TPG,s are in business, And they provide a service just like a waiter Taking your order, They are there to give you there EXPERT OPINION ON THE AUTHENTICITY AND GRADE BE IT COIN OR BANK NOTE!! Ive been doing Mpc,s for a long time but do i consider myself an Authority No way i still have alot to learn but i do appreciate owning The highest quality Mpc,s i can find, And at the end of the day ITS WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY!!!!
Can be rigid depending on who you have grade your notes PCGS notes Use a Mylar-d holder that is very sturdy, PMG is a little more rigid, But Both are good quality
