I saw that email this morning as well just about long enough to delete the thing.

 

Horrendously over priced, yup. The mint knows a lot of people will be willing to part with their money for something like that. Some will undoubtedly wind up being hocked on HSN by Mike Mezack for outrageous prices.

 

Stupid yes, but a lot of people will buy one thinking it is a good investment. Nothing you buy from the US Mint is an investment.

Indeed WAAAAAYYYY too high. Also noticed in the adv that they tried to both downsize/minimize and locate (hide) a rather scrawny-looking w mint mark between two rays, which didn't work well IMO.

I went to the Mint site and guess what, they did not sell out of that reasonably priced(? LOL) gold piece as of 4:02 pm EDT All they had to sell was 9,100 and they couldn't do that in 4 hours.

 

let the HSNs of the world buy them, sell them to folks with their mark ups for MS70s, who will then sell them for melt down the road to a dealer, and then pick a graded one up 2nd hand at a more reasonable price.

 

These generally don't sell out, they just have been popular this year with the design changes.

 

What about that piece justifies the nearly $900 markup over the spot price of gold?

 

There is no skin off my back. I wouldn't even consider it.
