    I know I haven't had the best luck with quarter eagles:( but I found this on ebay and it looks like something I would really enjoy. Seller wants 330 shipped, buy it now. Numismedia lists at 419. Do you thing is a good deal?

    1856 Gold Quarter Eagle NGC AU58

    If not , are there any current auctions you could recommend?

    Too bad it's not a "c" or a "D" for that price. :) I think if I had the funds, I'd bite...:)

    Nice coin, in one of the new holders no less. As long as you're comfortable with the seller and their terms, go for it if you like it.

    Just checked the greysheet.
    AU = $300
    MS-60 = $325

    IMO $330 is a very good price, even if you have to pay extra for S&H.
    If you like its look, I would recommend buying.

    Not a bad price for a type 1 in pretty good condition.

    I bought the item just now. I am very excited to see it in hand and will update this thread with some pics when I receive it.

    I would suggest you stay away from certain issues graded below Mint State. They are problem coins and IMHO not a worthy investment. Consider what the next grade up or two will cost. You may want to continue to look around.

    Once you hit the Mint State Grades the price jumps a lot. I just wanted a type coin and "the older the better" (1856). I don't like low end MS (60,61,62) and once your get into the 63's and 64's the price can easily hit $500-600 easily.

    It really depends on your ability to be patient and shop.coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=69022&Lot_No=62351coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=1121&Lot_No=10076
    Both these NGC AU58 sold for under $250.00 Plus the extras, so in this sense $330 is not bad, but the resale value drops considerably vs a more stable history in say 60, 61, or 62

    But if you happy with the coin and the price, simply disregard the previous advice.

    Best of luck, Tom

    It was a good buy for pre civil war gold. Congrats. By the time you are 50 it will definately be worth more than you paid and that's really all that matters.

    I totally forgot about NGC's photograph service thing. When did they start that? Anyway, I guess I should have looked at NGC's pics first cause they are a lot better than the sellers. After seeing NGCs, I am 10 times more satisfied with the coin. Here's the pics.
