Entry Post - These contests keep this site fun and fresh. Thanks for Lord M and his imaginary friend Quartermaster for these. My imaginary friend, K, sends his regards also. I just found this Kennedy in some rolls I was searching and held on to it in case "K" ever becomes famous. IMG_6067 (2).JPG

Thanks Quarter Master for your continuing generosity and puzzlement.

These are the closest I have to your creations. I can only imagine the makers of these foresaw the days of Zoid.

Thank you, @quartermaster and @lordmarcovan for this contest!
I have never found any counter-stamped coins.
Just asking a stupid question, or two, is counter-stamping considered defacing money?
I know you can't destroy/melt coins because it is against the law. So does the counter-stamp and putting them into elongation machines deface/destroy them?

Actually, that’s a myth. A very commonly believed one, however.

The Quarter Master, on the other hand, is no myth. He’s very real. Mysterious and unknown, to be sure, but quite real... and not me.

They say “there ain’t no Santa Claus in the coin business”, but the Quarter Master is the next best thing, maybe.

(Or so you’d say if you ever opened one of his mystery mailings and seen a crisp Ulysses or Benjamin in there with the latest counterstamped quarter. It has happened, sometimes.)

I have no pretensions of being Santa myself, but I try to be an elf, anyway. On a very small scale. ;)

@lordmarcovan SO, it is not illegal to melt down say undated silver dimes?

Correct. Even dated silver dimes are ok to melt. Even though I'm not our exalted @lordmarcovan

The Secretary of the Treasury prohibited the melting or export of cents and nickels. I believe that ban is still in force

You can do whatever you want to a coin, except that you can't alter a coin for fraudulent purposes, and you can't advertise on coins.

Banknotes are a different story. You can't intentionally render a banknote unsuitable for reissuance (circulation). There are two parts to that crime of defacement ("intentionally" and "unsuitable for reissuance"). Both must be met to meet the defacement threshold.

These are my interpretations based on reviewing the relevant laws and legal cases. Feel free to consult a lawyer if you plan to test the laws.

G'day QuarterMaster and thanks for the continued amusement you provide through your coins.

Thanks, YET AGAIN @lordmarcovan for your being the proxy elf for said QM. Your generosity in time, and effort for the CT Community is VERY much appreciated.

I don't have any CS coins to post. Road rash is the closest any of mine are to being marked lol

Federal law prohibits the melting of cents and nickels, for the purpose of reselling the metal. All other coins are "fair game". The reason for this is that the metal content of both cents and nickels is worth more than their face value. This refers to the pre-1982-83 cents which were predominantly copper. A copper cent is worth at least two cents in copper value and a nickel is worth about 8 cents in nickel value. In order to help enforce this law, there is a $10,000.00 fine attached to it.

You may be aware that merchants are currently experiencing a shortage of small change, especially cents. The purpose of the law is to prevent hoarding, which may be going on anyway.

There is a thread on CT somewhere, with photos, about a guy with multiple barrels full of pennies.

    @lordmarcovan has the pics.

Here are those famous trash cans full of Wheaties. I know he's got
a bunch and he has a Ferrari in the garage, but is this GOOBER still
buying these Wheaties. Kinda puts a damper on those few rolls the
CRH crowd has squirreled away. Better hope for an easing on the
    melt ban.
