Two important medieval coin hoards are in the news today. The first is a hoard of 131 early medieval gold coins found in the UK in 2014 but only made public when a coroner's inquest was opened on 29 September.

The second is a hoard of more than 600 medieval silver coins unearthed on Thursday (30 September) by metal detectorists in Denmark. Details are sketchy but many of the coins apparently belong to Svend Estridsen (1047-1076) and Cnut the Great (1016-1035).

The gold hoard is impressive. (Looks like mostly Merovingian tremisses plus a couple Byzantine solidi?) I wonder why it took so long for the coins to be revealed. Perhaps the finder didn't report them as they should have?

[Edit: the Danish hoard is impressive too, of course!]

Both extremely interesting hoards. I would really like clearer pictures of both, but especially the first hoard. Early medieval are very rare.

Fantastic stuff, @dltsrq. Would it be a safe guess that the Danish one dates to the hostilities between Svein Estrithson (sorry for the orthography) and Harald Hardraada?
...Doh, a while back, a Danish friend sent me this. He kindly went looking for an article in English --and to my embarrassment, I'd completely missed it, even though this is one of my 'go-to' news sites.

Both hoards are indeed interesting, especially the first one.

These are two different Danish hoards. The silver hoard I posted in this thread was only discovered last Thursday.

No, I got that part. That's why it was a little embarrassing --if timely-- that I'd forgotten about it till now.
(Edit: ) I liked how the chronology and composition of the Danish gold hoard complemented the English one. Regarding the silver hoard, the late Viking Age is kind of up my street. Posted a Danish penning of Magnus den Gode just a few days ago.
