I had to watch the movie with my wife as well and I thought the best part was when it was over. Watching Pierce Bronsan sing was difficult...:rolling:
I can't fathom spending money to see Abba in any form. While I don't hate their music, I wouldn't pay money for it, ESPECIALLY not that kind of money! My mom bought one of their songs on iTunes, that's enough for me. I've never actually been to a broadway play, even though it's about an hour, to 2 hours, depending on traffic to get there. There's been nothing I've wanted to see, and with no girlfriend to try and impress, there doesn't seem to be much point. (fat hairy guys who collect coins and diecast cars don't tend to attract many females) I've even been in a play, back in 5th grade, and still have no desire to go see one. (Those of you who are on Facebook with me could even find those pictures if something possessed you to, I have them posted. Me = Shameless How many guys would post pictures of themselves in chicken suits? But I digress ) Wouldn't mind seeing the Rockettes someday though
Three additional comments, mostly about the medal this time: Do bears really have tongues that long? I've only ever seen Polar Bears in person, and when they opened their mouth, they kept their tongues in. That's some hat that lady is wearing. That can't be good for her neck muscles. Yes, I'm aware she is just on a coin but I am guessing that it is modeled after a real person, or at least a real hat. I wonder which four people voted for the ticket? If any members of Abba are on here, no offence on my previous comment PS...have you found a forum related to broadway musicals? If so, I would guess you would see a similar 95% or more in favor of one side, but of the tickets and not of the medal. Very nice medal as well, I like the design. With $250 I could get more then 2500 coins by buying a bulk world lot as well!
Id rather spend it at the home shopping network on rediculously over priced coins then on a broadway musical. Well... unless its west side story... "i feel pretty.. ohh so pretty.. "
Firstly, hiho, this is a much better thread, to me, than the 'spouse' related thread I saw posted a few days ago regarding these two items. For couples, friends or even a group going out together to enjoy a live event there's little else to compete with the value of memories you can share throughout your lives regarding that moment in time. Sure the coin will always be there with you and provide a lot of enjoyment while in your possession, but there's something more singular about acquiring the medal even though many people may appreciate it and take enjoyment from the piece. The singular moment in time spent together at a performance is much more precious in some ways. In future it can only be enjoyed in emotion recorded in memories. But the 'show must go on' and does night after night, and Mamma Mia on the silver screen and on DVD in home theater, goes on infinitely. Broadway vs. the gold medal becomes a question of quality in my response. I voted for the gold medal and I am someone who goes to live concerts in NYC and has paid significant ticket prices for performances at The Metropolitan Opera, NYC Ballet, NYC Philharmonic, Carnegie Hall, etc. Top venues don't only charge top dollar for limited seating, lush interiors, prestige and profit, but they often don't sell out all seats at full retail. This is especially true on Broadway, which is why you often find long lines at the TKTS discount booth the day of shows with tourists crowding the line for cheap remaining seats at overpriced performances. The City of New York even has tourism ad campaigns to drive tourist dollars at Broadway which continues to decline in quality and budget crisis. Discount tickets usually print the full retail value of the seats but not the actual amount charged to the customer. In this case it appears someone did fork over significant cash for this seat and in so doing helped to pay for all those discounted tickets that might be sold. But this being 'Broadway' and not Lincoln Center I don't personally see the value in the quality of the piece produced (even if paying for discount seating) and performed to that of a particularly special, limited (rare) gold coin. The two are far from equivalent. The idea of 'up front in plush orchestra seats' does not necessarily equal the finest seats in any concert house. Rather mid-floor orchestra seating and First Balcony (boxes) tend to be better not only in terms of seeing all action on stage but in acoustics, access to concessions, restrooms and in boxes, a private cloak room. For me, Broadway isn't theatre nor worth the price of the seats for a song and dance, especially blown out of a pop/disco tune. Broadway continues to undermine the quality of musicians as well as relies upon a cast of alternates to perform lead roles after the initial seasons or when someone is out since the show schedule is so demanding, night after night. Theatre goers may be disappointed missing a star in this event. Broadway's significant ticket costs also mean you are paying for the Unions assisting the production, rent, utilities and numerous other things, but the quality of "Broadway" is very, very low in my opinion to that of classical performance when discussing what you get for what you paid for in regards to the piece you are there to enjoy. Please, I hope, no one take this as 'snobbery' between choices of music/performance. This poll is an issue of quality for me, hence the gold medal wins my heart over Broadway. The significant ticket prices of live performance isn't that different between Broadway and Opera/Ballet/Symphony, but the quality of what you are getting from Broadway to classical performance is leaps and bounds apart. BTW, this is a particularly beautiful medal you choose and on the surface a no brainer. Thanks for sharing. :thumb:
I'm taking the medal, because I don't like ABBA. If it was a Gershwin musical, it would most probably be another story...
I'm a big-time theatre kid with several major roles in shows (high school shows that is. Not in any major broadway productions.). I've always wanted to see a broadway show but its a GOLD coin. I'll take the medal. I could always go be on broadway......
I'm single and would opt out for the coin. A one time expense for the coin but to relive the Play one would have to pay the price each time they wanted to take a look at it. Aside from this the coin could go just about anywhere with you, (not that you would be walking outside much with it in your pocket). The Play, well it would be kinda hard getting all those people and props in your pocket for an evening strole.
Krispy get the award for the most thoughtful response to this thread. Sorry, you don't win a gold medal or theatre tickets. How about my respect?
I voted for the medal it combines 2 of my hobbies in one. And I even like A8BA. super trooper beams are gonna find me but i wont feel blue Stuck in your head yet????
The Scottish band Camera Obscura actually do a very good cover of "Super Trooper". I found two (used) ticket stubs for the Lady GaGa Monster Ball at Radio City Music Hall on the way to work tonight, but I'll resist the urge to post another "which would you choose" as I already know the answer. You should have seen how some of the audience were dressed.
Well, I think there's a little bit of bias on the part of this group... and I wonder what the results would be if you posted the same poll on a Broadway Show discussion forum (and they do exist, I checked)! Even so... there's no question I would take the medal. It's really quite a beautiful piece.
