hello 1944steel wheat penny

    hello every body i hope everone had a nice holiday.i by luck found a 1944 wheat penny and i thought i read somewere that they are rare.i stuck a small magnet to it it didnt stick.but when i got a big magnet it sticks somewhat?is this true and i will post a pic asap.thanks for any help!

    The size of the magnet shouldn't really matter at all; if it is a steel penny, then it will stick completely, not just somewhat. It may look silvery/steel colored if the penny has been electroplated with zinc, which is a relatively common experiment in elementary school science classes.

    It''s the 1943 bronze cent that is rare. Copper is paramagnetic and a really big (several tesla strength) magnet will induce a small attractive force.
    Now 1944 steel cents doe exist (a couple dozen I think) and they will be attracted by any magnet.

    thank you guys for your input it does not stick very well so i will say its probably not steel.it looks really old and a little copperish not completey silver thank you guys for clearing that for me;)

    It most certainly is a steel penny.
    The copper one is the expensive one, ;)

    Sorry, snaz, but that goes for 1943, not 1944. 1944's were supposed to be copper, not steel.

    Yeah, best to check the thickness on that. You wouldn't want to pass up a Pierfort cent. :D
