Does anyone know how rare a 1964 is with FS? Do any exist? How about with just 4? I am curious. I was going through a roll of nickels the other day and found a 64 with 4 full steps. Closest thing I have ever seen to FS. What do you registry collectors have to say? Can you help me out?
It is not anywhere close to being the rarest date/mm for 5FS and is listed as 1:30 for 5FS. Having said that, finding a certified 1964 5FS is very challenging with total population in all grades 78: PCGS (73) NGC (5). You have to remember that the total mintage was over 1 billion nickels.
oh, I know. More 1964 nickels out there than any other date. They made them for almost 2 full years, but I know that FS between 1953 and 1967 are very scarce and I was wondering how many exist with 5FS or better. I guess more than I originally thought.
My Father left me a number of rolls he stashed away when they first came out. In the group were a number of 1964 nickel rolls (Cleveland Federal Reserve wrapper). I cracked a few of them and the steps were very disappointing...2-3 at best. That's all I know about 1964 nickels.
A good rule of thumb is that if it was minted in the 60s, it's rare with full steps. (If memory serves, the 1962 is easily the most common of the lot and is the only exception.) 1970-dated coins are every bit as bad, although the steps start to reappear in 1971.
According to PCGS price guides, the 1964-P nickel in FS has a value that varies tremendously with grade: MS63 $25 MS64 $85 MS65 $400 MS66 $5,000
