I bought a couple of proof sets! Interesting (to me) is the toning of the quarter, sort of a milky white halo..... and the 1976 penny with a tad of rainbow. Everything else in the sets look normal. IMG_20211002_192907.jpg IMG_20211002_193136.jpg

Nice haul. I am like you. I can’t leave a coin shop knowing that there are lonely coins that need a good home.

If the owner is cordial and talks with me, I buy. If they are grumpy and negative, I don't. Where I live there are both kinds.

Nice, I'll take proof sets off their hands every time. Shop owners are usually happy to move them so I can get a good price.

I think I remember being told that the "milky" cloudiness on a coin was a bad thing. I do have some proof sets with that issue. so is it OK or Bad? Removable?

The milky white is the beginning stages of toning. I wouldn't call it a bad thing, but you can't get rid of it with acetone or xylene.

What dose the reverse look like on those? JP@

Wonder if the milky condition is the same as haze...? I've had a couple with what I always called haze (smoky, etc), but they've never worsened into the more full milky condition...just stays the same year after year.

Are you saying it will get more milky or semething else? Just curious since I will not be doing anything about it beyond safely storing it away.

It will eventually tone into a deeper color, depending on your storage conditions.

I like the entire set but I especially like the penny, the tone and woody look is great. Thanks for sharing your incredible set.

I consider it a bad thing.

I don't believe it is a beginning stage of toning, I think it is the result of outgassing of the plastic depositing on the coin.
