Howdy, I had this Jefferson up a few days back asking about die deterioration causing orange peel finish. I completely forgot to ask about the MM. I can't seem to match it with anything on Variety or Wexler's and need help to determine if it is an rpm and if so the variety. Thanks for any help
Can I ask a simple question ? Did you see anything remotely similar ? We will help if you present us with something to compare it to . Thanks
On Wexler it resembles WRPM-005 but the markers don't seem to be visible on the M in Unum or the first L in Montecello.
Thanks SensibleSal66 Wexler's has the similar bubble strike but because the die was so deteriorated, I could not find the markers. And I don't see anything on Vista that has the bubble look. Of course I'm probably wrong but that's nothing new...lol
Yea, it's a tough one . Might not be worth having it looked at for all your troubles . Not to mention time and money involved .
My opinion would be a guess so I will wait for the more experienced to chime in. Very interesting coin. Thanks
Prior to 1989, the mm was individually stamped into each working die (the die used to strike coins). Since then, it's added upstream in the die making process (I can't recall if it's the working hub or master die step). Die deterioration is caused by abrasion/erosion due to the moving metal of tens of thousands of coins. Here is some more info explaining DDD from Wexler's site. https://www.doubleddie.com/144801.html
