Anyone 'mistakingly' spend or otherwise get rid of an valuable coin?

When i was real young, long before i started collecting coins, i had a jefferson nickle that was, from what i have learned, a die clash. The obverse of the coin was correct with Jeffersons face, but it also had, at a rotated angle, the image of the reverse. It wasnt a full image, but it was about 75% or so. All i remember thinking was that someone probably pressed the two together real hard to leave the impression (which i guess is still a possibility without further examination).

I really wish i started collecting coins the week or month prior to finding that nickle. (by some gods miracle, i will search my 'junk' pile to see if i did keep it)

anyone else have any similar misfortunes prior to 'knowing' better

Every once in a while I'll spend a silver Kennedy, wheat cent, or dateless Buffalo. None of them are particularly valuable, but who knows if they'll inspire a young collector.

That's neat. As far as I'm concerned, not that I know of. I did lose some once, but that's a whole other story.

this is sad but true...years ago i had found about 30 brand new brass plated cents..the color was only slightly different so i dodnt think much of it, of course i didnt know at the time that they were errors!!! so I put them back in circulation...it still hurts to think about this..lol

Just after I first started collecting (around age 11 in the early '80s), I was at the 7-11 and had to decide between the Snickers and Kit Kat bars. I couldn't get both because I was 8 cents short. "But wait," my friend said, "you have that silver dime." And then I had both the Snickers and Kit Kat bars, and one less 1936 Mercury dime. I still remember it as if it was yesterday. I knew what it was and still spent it!

Till her Manager came over and informed her they where He took them to the register gave her $6.00 out of the till and put the 2's in his pocket when she stated see real money!!! LOL

I had a Barber quarter dated 1914 or so in a 2x2 about 6 or so years ago that I lost. I don't know where it went and I checked the car seats and all. Maybe it fell out of my pocket who knows... Only cost me $2 so it wasn't too big of a loss but is still a mystery to this day.

In 1976 my older cousin and I each got new $2 bills for our birthdays. The bills were given to us by a family friend who worked at a bank. They had been "certified" with a special postage-type stamp and a bank counter stamp, dated April 13, 1976, the day (I believe) the new bill was released for circulation. We kept them in pristine condition, but a few years later my cousin got hard up for gas money. He offered to sell me his $2 bill for $5. I only had $3, but he said that wasn't enough. He threatened to remove the stamp from his and spend it if I didn't give him $5. I just laughed at him. Sure enough, he removed the stamp and spent his $2 bill. I don't know that it was worth much more than face value, but it was neat to have, and I always thought it was a stupid thing for him to do.

    Hi,
The current cents are a copper plating over zinc. On occasion, the mix of copper ends up having zinc in it which creates a yellow brass color. The brass-plated cents as they are called are valuable depending on the degree of yellow color vs. copper color. I'll scan a few later to show the difference. They are not plated outside the mint.

    Hi,
Glad to help. They are fairly collectible and do show up during searches of coin rolls.

I'm sure I have mistakenly spent valuable coins. I don't know what they might have been. If I knew, I wouldn't have spent them and it wouldn't have been a mistake. However, my cousin spent a bunch of Morgan dollars to buy cigarettes.

ha i still spend $2 dollar bills at face. Why didn't he take $3 for it rather than spend it as $2 though lol? Just to spite you I guess......

I deliberately spent a buffalo nickel not too long ago. The cashier didn't notice.

A friend of mine said once he left on vacation, his older sons found his "change jar", it was full of silver coins. They spent all of it on smokes.
