Alright, it is time for the reveal, and nobody got both coins correct.

    Coin #1

The reason for this little exercise is because Coin #1 was part of most recent submission while Coin #2 was from a submission last year and resided in my registry set. I was expecting an MS66 5FS grade from NGC and was going to bump the PCGS coin from registry. To my eye, the reverse of Coin #1 is an MS67 with clear 5FS all day long. The toning affords a level of eye appeal that Coin #2 simply doesn't have, and I think Coin #1 is clearly the superior coin. But NGC threw a monkey wrench into my plans when they were punitive in their grading, by allowing the admittedly MS65 obverse to control the overall grade of the coin.

But like most of the respondents of this thread, I simply like Coin #1 better and I don't care that it is graded lower, it is going to represent the Atlantic City Set of Jefferson Nickels.

Agree completely. Coin #1 is drastically undergraded

I think coin 1 was held back due to that black spot on the reverse and the cut on his cheek. PCGS was to Lenient with the steps.

Long day at work and at the pool hall after. Totally missed this one.

I had the first at 65FS only because the hit on the cheek. Coin 2 I had at 66FS.

I actually like the second coin better and prefer the slight cameo contrast due to the toning with the portrait having a very clean look. I also was bothered by the spot on the reverse of coin 1 around 9 o’clock.

I ought to just give you my cell #. You could have shot me a text… :woot:

    That brings back memories.

I looked at the coins briefly and graded them as I always do. Scrolled down to the bottom of page 1 to post my response and couldn’t see the grades which were disclosed on page 2.

I’m sure you were obviously joking with the Ed reply which I find hilarious.

When comparing the two coins together side by side I felt coin 2 was superior. Coin 1 seemed to have much better luster but also had 2 very distracting marks. Initially I only saw the spot to the left of Monticello. Now that you made me take a second look there is also what appears to be verdigris or a carbon spot on I in UNITED.

The jacket of Jefferson on coin 1 is severely marked up. While they may be planchet marks coin 2 area here is much cleaner.

I am blown away by how much more detail resides in the actual building on coin 1 vs coin 2.

Those are good points and I was worried by that hit you mentioned in an earlier post on Coin 1. To me that seems to be more of a driving factor in the grade than anything else.

And the Ed Wood joke is always in jest (at least I'm sure it was). The guy was so memorable that many of us still recall his antics with a good laugh. :)

Yes it was in jest. I heard about Ed Wood but never experienced him during the time he was active. Just struck me as funny that 66 people guessed in the poll and only CamaroMD came within 1/3 step on the PCGS coin (and probably got that right as well) of getting both grade and step designations correct. Then someone comes in after the reveal and nails both coin's grade and steps designations on the button...sounded like an Ed Wood story...:)

Sorry I missed this one, but played anyway without looking at the reveal. I got the steps right on both, but tagged both as 67s. I preferred the NGC, which is my preferred TPG for Brother Jefferson.
