I picked this up off ebay a month or so ago and was delighted when I recieved it. Auction pic was a scan of the coin while still in it's book, so was kind of blurred together and not much detail.... I can't find a ding on it, and appears to be close to red/brown... Q. - I hate to leave it in it 2x2 in a packed binder if this pup has the potential to be a high $ winner... What do you think it would grade, and would you submit it to ensure it stays protected beyond what a flip can offer ?
It is kind of hard to tell from your pictures, but a stab it that it will make 64. If the coin is really red, it may be worth slabbing if you have a dealer that will work with you. i.e. doesn't charge $50 for everything. A 64 red PCGS goes for +-$250. Your best bet would be to take it to a dealer and ask him/her.
I blew the pics up some,,, The coin is browner in hand than the pics illustrate, depends on what type of light it's in. Standard room light, it looks brown except for around the rims where some red'ish luster competes. Under strong light you can really see red'ish luster through much of the coin, but now way would it ever make RD... I was more impressed with the lack of hits in any of the fields, it's one of the cleanest cents i have, including some nice slabbed one's.... concerns would be that it was wizzed or something to give it such a lusterous and clean look... or i just got lucky as heck, dunno. Take another look at let me know if the new pics help you dial in a grade. Really considering sending this one in (my 1st submission), and want to get as much input as possible before I do. thanks,
Dunno... a combination of abit of strike weakness back there and some pic resolution or focus loss.... I just looked at it again under my 10x, there is more detail back there than the pic illustrates, but is also not as strong as the top of the head.... .... there also appear to be some flow lines running east to west along the left side of the lincoln from the shoulder up to where you've circled... they do appear to be honest flow lines to me, but i'm no expert.
Nice coin, but looks like obverse die was way overpolished from back of head all the way down the back. Regardless of that, MS-64/65 RB...
fyi.. $30.... I just purchased a slabbed ms63 (pcgs) from the bay for $125 just so I could compare each.. (and it was a nicely toned 31d also)... Also noticed a ms65rb (or maybe it was ms64rb) on the FUN heritage auction.... it was going for around $450,, yeow........ Are 31d's more rare in high grade than 31s's ? This pups going in a tomb,, any recommendations (pcgs, ngc, or anacs)?... I could send along 3-5 others if the deal gets better with volume.
Personally I would use PCGS - the last time I used them I had to send in 5 coins. I do not know for sure if that is still the case - and no the deal does not get better. Now with NGC I could send in one coin - but me and my father combined an order, I think we sent in 10. And again the deal did not get better, not for so few coins. And the cheapest would be ANAC's, but I am not too keen on their current grading and I think the bidding reflects this at times.
Yes, 31-D high grade coins are very rare. NGC & PCGS combined only have 490 31-D's certified in red. The 31-S's were saved by the bag (literally and you can find several threads on CT about it) and PCGS has 2076 by themselves.
