Hi all! Can anyone help me ID this tiny Greek coin? It is 10mm in diameter, and weighs 1.15g. Thanks!
Oooh, that's a toughie. The obverse facing portrait looks feminine... so it's probably Apollo . Could be someone else though: Larissa, a nymph, etc. At first I thought the reverse was a rose but I don't see any tiny Rhodes bronzes with a facing portrait so perhaps not. I tried rotating the reverse different ways-- maybe not a rose... but what? Could it be a mussel? Grynion issued tiny bronzes with Apollo facing obverse + mussel reverse although the ones in archives show Apollo facing slightly left. That may or may not rule it out. Looking at the reverse again, it's probably not a mussel so scratch Grynion. Tried another tact: AC search with terms "AE 10mm facing". That gave an interesting list of candidates and I think this may be your coin: AEOLIS, Larissa Phrikonis. 4th century BC. Æ 10mm (1.00 g, 5h). Horned head of female facing slightly right / Bull’s head facing slightly right. SNG Copenhagen -; SNG von Aulock -; BMC -; Weber 5563. VF, dark green patina. https://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=138196 Another CNG example (old auction; image is small) https://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=15667 Yours: I think I see a horn on the obverse figure
Totally agree with TIF's ID -- the horns on the bull on the reverse were the first thing that caught my eye.
