Recently a member posted this: "Likely will end up in Russia & Brazil were [where] several 1964-D Peace Dollars are (the ones given to soviet diplomats) or the 1933 Double Eagles given to several world leaders like in Brazil & Argentina.

Do you know of any source for this "fact."

If there is a 1964-D around anywhere it will be found in the LBJ Library - he was the one that was a proponent of minting them in the first place.

And why would anyone give anything in precious metal to a Soviet diplomat - they couldn't legally own them in the USSR and wouldn't likely take it since it could cause problems if they ever fell afoul of the KGB.

As far as the 1933 Saint, yes. King of Egypt (if I remember?) had one. It was sold sometime around when I was born.

No 1964 D coins if you ask me. The two they found in the 70's (? +/-) were melted when they were found.

Even if they still did exist, no chance I'd want one because they are illegal to own, and the gov wouldn't have to even give me compensation if they did come to take it.

The two coins you're referring to were the trial strikes held by the mint itself, if I remember correctly. Surely some of the employees who secured specimens at face value must have kept them!

    Then where are they, though?
They may be out there, but I'm sure we would have some more info on them if even a single employee kept one, let alone multiple!

    just my thoughts :)

There have been reports that we’ll known and respected numismatists have been shown examples of the ‘64-D.

The 64-D is the penultimate black box collectable IMHO.

    That is true.

However, someone posted the nonsense I quoted. I wish to know if any of those two coins were given to the Russians or reside in Brazil.

Rumors about black market items will always far exceed the rumors of actual transactions.

Most start because historically, extremely rare items were kept, sometimes legally, but usually illegally, by Congressmen, foreign dignitaries and Mint OFFICIALS.

They wind up being "discovered" decades later in the hands of their heirs after a lawyer or diplomat reaches a settlement to make the coin legal to own.

Until then, they remain the source of rumors and speculation.

I think there are probably still 4 more 1933 double eagles out there. Where they are I have no idea, and they weren't GIVEN to anyone.

As for 1964 D Peace dollars, I do think a few may still exist, but once again no idea where they are. These also would not have been given to anyone.

I think the story of them being in Russia or Brazil is probably nonsense.

I don't know about any of that - but didn't you personally grade this one back in the day ? Or is that still a secret ?

Now that - that's how "rumors" get started :D

    Just a little semantics clarification.

I meant given possession, not ownership.

I was thinking about Coins which were provided to Congressional Committee members with MINT oversight responsibilities, but who were required by the law to return them to the MINT for destruction, but somehow were never returned. They were never given ownership, despite possession.

The 1974 and 1974-D aluminium Lincoln cents come to mind. The latter date was seized by the Secret Service whilst the former was graded and sold.

I think it would be hard to keep that a secret these days. "Typical Internet forum nonsense" trumps "no"...but both.

Here's my 1964-D Peace Dollar. Sadly not made at the US Mint. Made by Dan Carr. If you can't own a real one you may a well own the next best thing. Over struck on real Peace Dollar. 1964 D Peace Dollar.jpg
