I often have come across vendors selling their artistic wares online and at Fairs . What's your thoughts on Coin jewelry ? Bad or Good . All comments welcome . This is an example ! Not mine . It's 24 karat plated, Silver accented with supposedly a real $5 Gold piece . Price ? $210 !
Here is a WLP coin broach my mother gave to me a little while back. Not sure how old it is,had a 1936 buffalo nickel in it.If I remember correctly it was a birthday gift still have the exact buffalo.
I don't have a problem with coin jewelry owned by someone else. Personally though, I'm not a fan of it. I would never wear it. It just gives me the appearance of being gaudy.
What I didn't like is the guy I bought an Indian Head Cent from ( gold plated with palladium outlining ), was that the necklace turned my neck green ( copper obviously) as I sweat. Ughh. Now I think of it as gaudy as well .
As long as it doesn't damage or alter the coin, OK...a simple necklace or brooch clasp around a silver or gold coin, etc...or even that ring in the photo (assuming genuine gold coin). But cutting, fusing, inserting stones, painting/coloring...altering the coin itself in any way...nay/no way.
I don't mind coins in jewelry. But if they are going to include a coin in their jewelry, I like the holder that don't deface or damage the coin, unless the coin is not worth more than face value.
In what seems a lifetime ago I was involved in the early days of the International Society of Appraisers. Once, Ben Stack spoke at one of our conferences and he stated in his experience, that over 90% of all ancient coins displayed in jewelry were counterfeits. Also, once a genuine coin is mounted in jewelry it will, at some point go through a cleaning and/or polishing process that will reduce its numismatic value.
To me, one should always place a details coin in jewelry since it will become that, (and mount removed), eventually. If this is true, I have no problem with modern coins made into jewelry. I still hate ancients made into it though.
I don't care for coin jewelry. Some are beautiful but I would prefer to see them in original form rather than worn, beat up, and damaged. Just my opinion.
It seems like an attractive ring, but with a $500 value gold $5 coin imbedded, seems pretty hard to think it is anything other than phony.
