Its from the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld. Today/ that is part of Germany. German States struck more Gold/ Silver coinage then other Country. John
I am trying to get that info/ for my data label. I have around 50 AV Quarter Dukats most are between 16mm/14mm. John PS: I got another Quarter Dukat in my sights in Kunker Oct. 30th event.
@lordmarcovan A typical U.S. Half Dime is 15.5 mm in diameter. I know it's gold, but talk about small change.
Half dimes I’m familiar with firsthand, both as a collector and a detectorist. Getman States quarter-ducats are a different matter. Yes, small change indeed. Literally.
I found it in my 18th century Krause catalog. German States/Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld KM#29, weight-0.8750 g. , .9860 gold. That is a very high purity gold for a gold coin. From my catalog picture it looks close to 12mm.
Yep. The online listing for KM29 says 12 mm. Thanks, 'Yoda. Numista does not seem to list it, or if they do, I couldn't find one. They do list a full ducat.
Just got home from work.... These 1/32 1/16 1/8 1/4 Dukaten where really small/ but I doubt if your average person had them in their possession. A Quarter Dukat had a lot of buying power back in 1743 The nice thing about the Dukat was the wide range of coinage from 100 Dukaten 350g. to the teeny 1/32 Dukat. John
And I'm happy for you. I'm always glad to see someone add to their collection, especially with something they really want, and, also to add such a nice example. As usual, you don't disappoint. But, as with many (actually, just about all of them, lol), this one, and one more, will make 2 that I've seen, or even heard of! :=)
