I haven't used excel in so many years, I'd have to sign up for a refresher course, lol. But, I do like the possibility!

I use Exact Change by Wildman Software. GREAT program. What sets it apart is that coin and price updates are free, contrary to most others.

That is a good feature, but one takes that for granted with Free Software. They get updated constantly as part of nornmal operations. That is true for the entire OS.

I just started using Numista to inventory and track my collection because of comments in this thread, I love that it's free, easy to use, I can export it to Excel, and the weights / records feature is neat, plus the values - their estimates and your own if you like. I am currently putting them all in as private with notes on Grading / TPG or "mint packaging" etc but I like the fact that you can use them to list coins for swap too just by clicking on the option - here's a partial screenshot of my current situation (I'm not done by a long shot yet) - Numistascreen.png

The reason I use Excel is that it is quick and easy. I have been using spreadsheet software ever since computers were available to the masses which I think, was about 1983. Part of my job at a university was to prepare an annual Financial Report. I used spreadsheet papers 11"x 17" which sometime, I have to tape some pages together to include all my information. After I had prepared my pencil and paper reports and summaries, I submitted them to the Vice-Chancellor of Business Affairs. He, then, had his secretary type it out. With my worksheets, I had included a summary report for the University of North Carolina General Administration.
I was in love with the first spreadsheet software that came out. That started me out with using spreadsheet software.
Before I make a change in how I maintain an inventory of my collection, I would love to have a list of Coin Collecting Software and their cost. Then, I would do an in-depth study of each software package. My thoughts are that once a software package is purchased, the coins will all have to be input into the software, which would probably take many of us a great deal of time to complete that task. As you learn more about the capabilities of the software, more information will have to be collected and entered. Each new purchase will have to be categorized and entered. My question would be, "How much time will you spend building the database you want in one of the coin softwares?" Also, after everyone of your coins are in the system, how frequently will you need to look at your coins and how much of the coin you are interested in.
My papa always told me when I wanted to do something to "KISS".
Before you purchase any software, do a lot of searching and evaluating each one. After all, the coins are your responsibility and only you will be developing, entering, and looking at your collection. Best of luck on those that have already made their choice as well as to those that will making a difficult choice on how you want to maintain your inventory of your coins.

I just have to stop you, right here. It is just not true. Over 90% of the excel spread sheets that are made are simply WRONG. The data is wrong as it has zero contraints on data entry. Additionally to that, it is a PIA to use and set up. So there is that.

That is why accounting firms have specialized software that is not excel or a spreadsheet for the serious work.

Human Interface Design is a science, and it is taught at NYU.

There is also a problem that over time excel changes and breaks with former versions, which is not of little consequence.

If you use a Free Software program designed for coins then you have long term stability, free upgrades, direct access to the developers, low cost (or no cost) and an interface designed specifically for the task. That is KISS.

Nothing about Excel is simple. It is an animal, and an insecure one at that.

But when you are a HAMMER... everything is a nail.

At least with OpenNumismat the coin data can be imported from several sources, including excel, FWIW.

    5.5 Importing
OpenNumismat allows you to import data into a collection from an Excel file. To do this, select the menu File->Import->Excel and select the source file. After that, the dialog for assigning fields with the first 10 coins from the source file will be opened:

I take it that many of you have disposable time to enter and play with your coin collection. Since I've been using Excel for many, many, years, I have learned to use it in many different applications. I guess the main reason I use Excel is because I don't have a large and diversified collection and I use Excel for many financial issues, so using it for my collection is easier than adding another software package.

Every time you post on this subject, it reinforces my suspicion that you have never had a job in the corporate world that required any kind of data analysis.

That is because you are ignorant about software. I can't help you, not that corperations are a gold standard for software use and choices. Mostly they are stupid as rocks, which is why we have trillion dollars in loses in security break ins..

umm - let me introduce to to the R programming language. Put down the excel spreadsheet and use the gold standard tools...

I'm not a software expert, but neither are you. Mostly you are a braggadocio, on a multitude of subjects. And I see you inherited your father's annoying habit of posting internet links thinking that wins you the debate, it won't. I'm not reading any of the links you post. You wanna win an argument with me, do it in your own words.

I don't care about that, you don't need a programming language to complete simple data analysis. Furthermore, your boss needs to be able understand what you produce.

Earlier, I hinted that I was suspicious that you ever had a corporate data analysis job. Now I am flat out asking, have you ever had a corporate data analysis job?

If you are not using R, you are simply not doing serious data analysis for industry. You have to be completely clueless to suggest otherwise.

Wow! Such language. Tsk! Tsk! Play nice. My thoughts are that there are many ways of getting what you want or need. I was probably using some type of spreadsheet before many of you were born. I have a friend that set up tables on Word to keep up with his coins... and his comics... and his baseball cards... and his family's budget. Just because some of you don't like broccoli doesn't mean it tastes bad. You just have a different way in your diet. (By the way, I hate broccoli, buy my wife keeps making it.)
