The US Secret Service originally thought that they were fakes, they (the Secret Service) confiscated them as counterfiets, and destroyed them.


No compensation to the owners was ever made.

 

I've never heard about this (was out of coins for years until March of 2009 when I got back into it). That really, really sucks. I presume that if you found one today, it would NOT be confiscated. Correct?

 

Went to the banks today and got $110 worth of Half Dollars and Found

From teller's tray last week, two of the ugliest (actually dark) Franklins, but can't complain because its silver. Haven't done much roll hunting lately.

 

15 rolls searched. 2-1967 kennedy halves 2-1964 kennedy halves...and one 1942 walking liberty half!!!!!

 

Yes thats correct.
Back at the time 1969 no mint mark double dies fakes were created and it took thema while until they saw the "S" mintmark, by then it was too late for many 1969 S DDO-1

Chances of finding one today are slim, since you have to presume a mjority was destoryed.

At the bank today picking up some cents to go through and one of the tellers said I have something for you. I got a 1998 silver dollar for face

1 roll of halves, 1-1967 and 1-1968. Not bad on my first attempt looking for silver.

 

Had the day off so I called around to local banks for halves. The last bank I called said they had 150.00 worth customer wrapped. Long story short....Four rolls were complete 40%ers and the other eleven rolls had 3 40%ers. 83 40%ers!!!!! Its been months sence I've had luck like this. Plus their was a SBA rolled in the middle of one of the rolls. When you least expect it you hit big!

 

Pretty cool - I once got one as a cashier. The guy knew that he had something worth more than a buck, but he really wanted his cigarettes, so he gave it as a dollar...
