One thing I was worried about when the design changed of the normal coins to the shield design was that we would see less commemorative issues coming out each year as they focused on them.

Well it certainly hasn't been the case and this year is certainly no different...

(the coin says 2009, but I don't think they have been released into circulation yet)

I like the reverse of both 1 pound coins. Unfortunately "The Thing" is on the Obverse. Traci

That 50p is atrocious! It would be cute if it were stuck to my fridge, but on a coin its terrible.

I wonder anyway how many of these will actually end up in circulation. With a maximum mintage of 250,000 for each of the coins you showed, they won't be terribly common ...

Not sure about the Olympics 50p piece - yes, it says 2009, and no, it is not included in the 2010 Proof or BU sets. So maybe there won't be a 2010 coin with that particular design?

Oh, and don't worry about the number of coins to be issued. In addition to these, there are all the Olympics Countdown coins. And and and. :)

I was thinking about the Olympic handover £2 coin from 2008, something which I'm only seeing in my change now. And it was never part of any sets in 2008.

I thought it might be another case like that, I bought both the 2010 proof set and a BU folder with that 50p in anyway. Collecting all 29 of the 50ps will be fun and Id wish they would put more into circulation so kids could try and collect them all.

I'm a massive fan of London 2012 and I'm following the construction of the Olympic park intently...however I don't own a single 2012 coin yet.
I certainly don't see the point in releasing a coin saying '3 years to go', although I know China did it and Canada are doing it.

Something else released by the royal mint this year which took my interest...

    A £2 coin collection folder.

This interests me as it was the £2 coins that first got me into collecting coins in the first place.

I used to blu-tac them to my TV as means of storage...needless to say this completely ruined the obverse...I still have them all.

Buy one if only to have a high quality example of the shield set.

I agree: the new issues are considerably more attractive as a set than the old. Has there been any indication of how long the shield types are going to run for ?

    Ebay.

I did notice the royal mint used to have free P&P...now no longer.

I buy from the RM as they have them first, and they're to be trusted above all others.

But they do not charge a lot for postage. In early December I purchased three items from the Royal Mint, and had to pay £2.95 for shipping from the UK to Germany. And as the three items arrived in three separate shipments, I don't think they made a lot of extra profit. ;)

All these coins if you are British will make their way into your change soon. But not this year. The tendency for these coins is to be put into circulation the year after they are actually dated. For instance you may have started noticing the 2008 Olympic handover coins some way through last year but not before and you probably wouldn't have found a 2009 darwin or burns £2 coin in your change yet as they won't be in circulation til this year. You can of course buy them in the year they are dated but I have never found a commemorative coin in it's dated year.

    29?

I'm happy that you like your coins.

Personally I can't stand the fact that the RM have released coins celebrating the restoration of the moochers by divine right. Just my two cents.

I wonder if Queen Elizabeth will get a specially presented Girl Guide commemorative, being that she was a Girl Guide :D
