Please guess the grade of the 1952-D Jefferson Nickel shown below. I have attached a poll for you to cast your vote and you may select up to 3 different things: the numerical grade, the * designation, and + grade. As always, comments welcome, and please remember to vote in the poll. PS Obverse scratch is on holder, not the coin.
I'm going to make the assumption that the long white line on the obverse is a scratch on the slab. I'm also going to make the assumption that the luster is stronger on this coin than the images show. Based on those assumptions, I'm at 66 on this one. I think the eye appeal overcomes the planchet roughness on the cheek, as well as the planchet void on the reverse below Pluribus.
If as @physics-fan3.14 mentioned, if the scratch is indeed on the slab, I also would vote MS66. There are marks and hits that would probably keep it from going high, but then what do I know.
I see MS66, but jeez, maybe it could be 67. So I went 66+. I gave it a star, because if this coin does not get a star, what would?
I think it's a stunning coin. Really clean, basically no hits, and lovely pastel colors. I also think it's a pretty well struck coin as if I remember right, 50s Jefferson's had strike issues. I'm at MS66*. I think this coin has an outside shot at 67...but I think it gets a "*" so they made it a 66.
MS 66....nice color but still not enough for a star by NGC nickel standards...surfaces are fairly blemish free ....not sure what that is under the L of "Pluribus"....is it a struck through area, delamination, or a hit? To me that is partially why I didn't go for a 67 grade
