I know there several different type of nickels so I am curious to know who all collects them and what kind they like best. I have started a set of Jeffersons from rolls I search and have all but 24 not counting the varieties. I have also been buying full date Buffalos for a folder for my first Grand Child that I have no idea when to expect. The buffalos have always interested me I remember my Grandfather showing me a Three Legged 37D back in 1969 and when he died in '72 it along with a couple of dozen Morgan Dollars disappeared. I know that neither of these two sets will be very valuable unless I get some of the rarer Buffalos but theyt are fun anyway. I am also going to work on a Liberty set of G to F grade raw coins. I would like to know some sources other than Ebay to find these nickels in Good to Fine condition. I also have a few AU/BU from the three series and plan on getting some of the older ones to have a type set. Any information you would like to share with me on Nickels I would appreciate. Thanks You Folks are always helpful.

I collect nickels - just prefer the shield nickels first for collecting. I have a dansco album of liberty nickels, some harris or whitman albums of Jefferson nickels(yep only fill these from pocket change). I have a few buffs and a three-legged buffalo(just had to have one of those). Also have a few war sets. The liberty nickels are just something to do on the side.

The great thing about a Jefferson circulation collection is that you can find nearly every year still circulating. I don't search a lot of nickel rolls, but I do get some on occation. I find on average a nickel from the 40s or 50s every two rolls. I have a set of Jeffersons (from circulation) with all holes filled except 2009. I also have V nickels, with several holes yet to fill, and Buffalos with about 3-4 holes to fill. One album at a time....

I have a full set of Jeffersons (-2009) from circulation and a Gem set I'm working on in a Dansco album. I'm also puttering with NGC & PCGS Jefferson Registry Sets but they're a fairly low priority right now.

I also have a few Buffalos and a few Liberties but have never made any serious attempts at adding to those sets. Not a single Shield nickel - not even in my 7070.

I'm a Nickel nut! complete Jefferson collection most not graded yet...but all are UNC. & Proofs from 1938 to date, with varities and errors also..... see my album for a 1938 proof Fleix Schlag signed #21 ....out of 150 proof nickel that Schlag signed and framed. I also collect buffalos and any other coin with the words 5 cents on it. lol The thing that really gets me is most collectors don't know the values of the 5 cent piece.....and mintages....there are alot of nickels that are lower in mintage than other key coins.....IE 1971 S no S around 1614 , 1994 & 1997 matte finish with the 97 only 25000 minted. Some of the proof issues of the Jefferson are very low mintage too. There is nothing prettyer than an toned buffalo nickel. And needless to say the 1913 V nickel only 5 known???? price tag in the millions and thats why ya collect nickels ....LOL

I have a complete Jefferson collection -- all of which were collected from pocket change. Jefferson's (along with Ikes) were the first coins that I collected, and still hold a place near and dear to my heart.

I have a nice full set of Jeffersons, these are not from circulation. Also 2 sets of the war nickels, several other partial sets of Jeffs.
My girlfriend is starting to put together a set too!
Now I wish I never sold the sets of Jeffs I had for too cheap.
Then I have a set of Liberty V nickels missing the 3 keys in a 1938 Whitman coin board framed.
    Started a set of Buffalos.
Have just one shield nickel [no rays] in the 7070 type set.
Looking for a 1866 with rays for the 7070

I've long been a big fan of nickels and have collected them all. In fact I've owned them all except the old proof only issues and some varieties. Now I only collect the 1965 to date ones in high grade but cu/ ni remains my favorite coinage material (especially for collecting).

Think the Jefferson nickels are my 2nd favorite. Have one complete set and missing three in a second set. Been working on a set of Liberty nickels - missing 4 and have 5 that are graded as only Good that I want to upgrade. It's been a real tough set and not sure you want to get these in Ebay. Seen the bidding on these go up to about 4-6 times the listed value of the coin. Sure would be great if you were a seller. Also noted that a lot of the dealers in my area don't have (or choose to have) them for sell??

I started collecting with nickels, Jeffersons then Liberty heads, then Shields and after I had all of those I went ahead and put together a set of buffalos because I figured if I had the other three sets I might as well finish off the last of the nickels. Got done with that set and moved on back to the half dimes and nickel three cent pieces. Never finished those last two sets before I moved on but I only need three seated half dimes and two nickel three cent pieces. I was one of the founding members of the American Nickel Collectors Association (now defunct), I've done research on Shield nickel varieties. I don't really do much with nickels anymore but I do still have a soft spot in my heart for them.

I have been working on a set of Liberty nickels for over a year. I still need the 1885 and 1912-S issues....in XF-AU. Nearly every coin in the set has a good deal of mint luster remaining. There may be 5 or 6 that are XFs.

My favorite series to collect is the Buffalo Nickel. Many interesting varieties and errors plus the striking and worn die issues for many dates.

Over the past 4 years, I have ended up with 4 different sets currently in process. A PCGS registry set, and 3 in Dansco folders (VF-AU, F-VF and G-VG).

My favorite Nickel is the Liberty of V nickel. The ballace of the coin is great and the details of an UNC coin are fantastic without being overpowering. The other varieties are wually interesting. Certainly the Jefferson series is the lest expensive and can be very attractive in higher grades.

Completed my Jefferson set, no proofs, and am constantly roll searching to upgrade. I also keep any dated in the 60's or earlier. Guess I should start another set or two. I've also kind of inherited my wife's buffalo set. She's lost interest with only 5 to go! I've been thinking about the liberty and shield sets, but with all the sets I've got going now.....
