Hey everyone . Seen this Cool 1940S Nickel floating around the forums and thought I'd get permission and post it for educational purposes . It's either a Lamination or Strike-through Error . Which do you believe or not believe it is . Thanks for the replies !
I will go with Struck Thru Foreign Object. Can you post a photo across the surface coin near the bottom of the dent and S? Is the metal raised there?
What I find unusual is that the anomaly totally obliterates the steps while the letters "EL" appear untouched.
The right edge of the E and all of the L (the portions inside the anomaly) are a bit 'fuzzy' - softened you might say. I'm thinking that it is a strike through some fairly soft object. The area at the bottom is smooth and looks dished or rounded by the object. I think that if it were a lam, it would look more torn and ragged.
Notice "Jeffy's" hair (tied back area) is weakened possibly result of what's going on in the Reverse ?
That is a strike through. If that was a lamination before strike, you wouldn't see that big build-up of metal at the very bottom of the impression. That tells me something was struck into it and the metal flow caused the raised metal to be closer to the edge (since Metal Flow goes from the center to the edges). And the reason why the separated steps don't show up but the letters below do is because the spacing between the steps is too narrow to have them be defined with the obstruction in that area
