AU50 AU53 AU55 AU58 It looked like you were trying to merge AU53 & AU55 because the poll only allows 10 options.
@cplradar …you probably meant the normal AU53. But you can use any number on the Sheldon scale you wish to accurately grade your coins. XF49 is a valid designation, just not a normal one…it’s close enough to pass for a AU50, but us old timers say XF we mean 45. So if you have 0-70 you can use, they are all good, as long as you apply them as best you believe to be the coin’s condition. Regarding the 0 level, I don’t remember ever seeing an actual zero used, I’ve seen P01 used many times. I don’t think I want to see a 0 graded coin…Spark
There is something specific about how they graded this coin that does bother me (a lot actually), and when I give the grade we can cover why it might have happened.
Most definitely. IMHO, two days is more than enough time. Why extend it out to Oct 5th? How many people have given their opinion on the grade after 2 days? I'm sure the reason why you got responses right away is because your post showed up in the "Recent Topics" list or the daily hit list. Once gone from there nobody new is going to ever see the post.
A day or two is plenty. Nobody will see it or care after that. GTG post should be fun and not annoying.
OK - it was graded an AU58.... NOT FULL SPLIT BANDS. This coin is clearly FSB, IMO! I can't see why it didn't get that grade. Should I have it regraded?
OK, I was right on the AU58 and wrong about FSB, but it sounded like there was something really unusual about the grade. So I thought maybe ANACS gave an AU coin FSB. I don't know - does any TPG give FSB, FBL, 5FS, FT etc designations to circulated coins? I find all of those designations to be a bit bogus because it's supposed to be strike quality but they reject based on bag marks. Regardless, there's nothing to prevent your coin from being both circulated AND full split bands in my view - they just don't designate it on AU coins.
I guess in hindsight I can see very slight rub on the hair which is why it was probably knocked down to AU. Overall it's a nice coin but lacks luster. It definitely has FSB regardless.
they won't give FSB with AU grades? That is really a bummer. This coins strike is about as good as it gets
In a second, closer look…there is a slight flattening of the hair behind the eye…props to @wxcoin …and a slight flattening of the diagonals on the reverse. Perhaps this is what prompted the AU…evidence of circulation. Yes, the strike is good and strong, but it is truly FSB…and it chaps my rosy red they don’t put it onto AU slabs..after all, it is another condition indicator and should accompany the grade on the label…IMHO…Spark
At least I learned something. I looked at the NGC and PCGS pop reports and they both have given out FB designations to AU coins and for 1942/1 PCGS has them down to VF30, although I suspect "mechanical error" on a few. So if you feel strongly about it, resubmit.
Well, this is proof at AU58's are some of the most desirable coins in existence. This is a super coin, and I fell in love with it when I first saw it. I looked over my shoulder, carefully, to make sure nobody noticed I noticed it and held my breath when I handed it the women to pay for it. It was like $15 or something like that. It just annoys me that it didn't get the designation, but it is a beauty. Personally, I have no idea why it was AU instead of MS, but I can live with it. Look at that AWESOME strike!
