A year for a coin to come back from PCGS?

Most people who go south on deals have usually built a reputation of being trustful before they take people for a ride. Usually they aren't bad people; they have just found themselves in a bad situation.

I'm not going to say that your dealer is acting nefariously as there is not enough info to make that judgement. However, from the brief explanation, something smells rotten. Even if everything works out and nothing nefarious has happened, this should be a sign that this dealer is highly unorganized and not straightforward. Him saying he is waiting for the coins from PCGS when he should easily have been able to track down where they are is a huge red flag, in my opinion.

For $250 you can join PCGS, and you'll get 8 'free' gradings. Yes, you'll have to pay the shipping, but YOU'LL be in control, and able to keep tabs on thins. That equates to "Piece of Mind" which has an intangible value in and of itself.

I understand wanting to 'keep it local' 'support the little guy' etc (I understand and fully appreciate it, being a small mom & pop myself), but there comes a point where the value received is no longer justified. IMO, that's the case here. Continue to buy his stuff if you like him and his products, but submitting? He's proven he adds no additional value to that service.

What was the coin? It could well be a perfect storm

    * It sat a while with the dealer before it was actually sent it
    * It ran into the lockdown(s) when PCGS was closed and not processing submissions
    * As somebody earlier said, submissions didn't stop just because of lockdowns created a backlog slowing down processing
    * It is unusual or questionable and needed to be sent out to an outside expert
    * The expert may have been backlogged, had limited hours, etc.

all adds up to an absurd amount of time

I remember hearing about that. Just one of the many reasons why it's better for people to do it themselves and have control of the process

A more cynical person might think that the TPG knew the coin was worth hundreds but insured for $25 so substituted a damaged coin and gave them $25 and a damaged coin back for a coin worth hundreds...

Edit: or the original dealer made the switcheroo before submission.

While both of those scenarios are incredibly unlikely, there is that teensy possibility of the second possibility actually happening, reinforcing the value of peace of mind by doing your own submissions.

The possibility of the TPG (well, the top 4 at least) doing something like that is a ridiculous hypothetical, and warrants no serious response.

I agree, I am not that cynical. Just one of the possibilities that probably goes through the OP's mind trying to figure out what is going on with his coins. Then someone gives a horror story about coins worth hundreds getting damaged and coming back in a body bag...sorry to pile on. Everything will be fine. Human nature to expect the worst I guess.

In the stories case it was pretty easy to match it being a hard to find world coin, there was some freak planchet flaw or something like that that the prong peeled back if I remember right. You are right though that in most cases it wouldn't be very hard for a dealer to swap a coin and just claim the TPG damaged it or put an AU 58 for an MS one and say theyre being overly harsh on rub or submit moderns with yours and give you a 69 etc.

I'm not sure if it was that one, or a different one where the coin was a siege coin made from pressed paper and the edge of the coin was damaged by the compression of the prongs. Both occurred around the same time and in the case of the paper coin it was too rare for a substitution to have been done.

Yea it was one of those, it might have been the paper one. Either way that dealer really hosed the submitter and should have been the one that had to make it right but I'm guessing the submitter had to eat it

Update: I still haven't received back my coin but the dealer gave me a full refund for what I think is the full value of the coin which is $125. I still want the coin back but I spent an amount under $50 for the coin so at least I am not losing money. I think he is being honest about losing the coin or he wouldn't have given me money for the coin.

I'm sure you'd rather have the coin though.

Here's the only question really, can you find a suitable replacement for it for $125?

Maybe he misplaced it, maybe he sold it and thought he'd find a replacement by now that didn't pan out for whatever the reason, maybe he had it in his pocket and stuck it in a tip jar for a coffee in the morning, who knows really. sucks you got jerked around for over a year on it. if you can get a suitable replacement for $125 at least you are made whole on that part, but your lost time and the frustration over it..... yeah...

at least that parts finally over though.

Update: Coin has been found! It was never sent out to be graded but it got buried by a bunch of other things in the store. Now all I have to do is pay him back the money for the coin I got just in case it wasn't found which will probably be this Saturday. I may still have it sent out to be graded but I will wait a few months from now when he is not as busy.

I wouldn't do business with that dealer any more. What if it was something really valuable?

Absolutely, 100% in agreement. I can't figure out what would compel anyone to consider furthering a business relationship when the first thing you need to establish is trust, and that was without any question of a doubt lost and abandoned with this LCS owner a long time ago.
