I recently came across this 1830 Capped Bust Half, with what I believe is large "O" because the small '0' is more circular the large elongated, this looks elongated to me. and really enjoy the look and nice looks on the obverse and reverse. Being new to this area of the Capped Bust and I did some investigating before the purchase. I feel the coin is worth getting slabbed and I'll go out and a limb here and give it a XF-45. My friends who are the pros in this area, give me your thoughts and what would your grade be and if it should go in. Thanks, can't wait to hear.
Nice coin really like the engravings around the eagle but because of that it wouldn't straight grade just keep it raw and enjoy it.
It is actually a "small 0"...the Overton 103. With the engraving on the reverse there is no way this coin would get a straight grade from any legitimate TPC. Save your money and enjoy the coin for what it is. By the way, these are CAPPED bust halves, not CAPE.
Also with the 'O', when I look at this the small 'O' since perfectly round this one seems more oval. yes ?
As far as the large or small Os are concerned there really isn't that much difference in hand. Small O (O-112) Large O (O-122) It takes some study and experience. Stick with it; you'll get there.
I compared the two pictures you posted, thank you, the other difference is the distance between the lower hair curl and top of the 'O' which I see in the comparison pictures you posted. I can't compare what I have here to anything else so that helps tremendously. Thumbs up.
Someone did a real nice job of engraving a real nice coin, but otherwise permanently ruined any potential for grading and associated $ value comparable to what it could have been. You should holder it in something to protect it...put it in a nice 2x2 snap-tite or other similar holder (no cardboard or staples). Hard to buy just one but if you're getting into halves buy some from your LCS or direct from Whitman, or their round ring-tites. Beautiful coin...such nice rims/dentils.
Please don't submit, for your own sake. It would just come back details. Some people like this stuff though, and because the reverse wasn't grounded flat I'm sure you can get a good amount of money for it if you decide to sell. It will keep quite a bit of its value, I'd think. Heres my details bust half. Wasn't too distracting so I didn't mind. X marks the spot I guess.
I got it for a good price, don't know if I'm supposed to say. I'll keep it even with the date on the reverse.
I would send it in. It is very attractive. It is not about the money, to me. There is a story, there, and it may one day be discovered.
