I used to think the copper thing wasn't worth my time. But then I got to thinking, "I'm looking at all the dates anyway, why don't I just start putting all the pre-1982s in a bin?" So I started doing that and have only been finding about 12-14% copper. I don't think I could ever melt the coins, but maybe mine will be worth more if everyone else melts all their copper. If I wait until they're more rare, that it'll just take that much more time to find them!

I am primarily hunting for wheats and other older coins in my rolls anyway. If I wait a few more years to start saving copper, there will only be 4-6 coppers in a box (that's about the rate I seem to find wheats now).

i usually get the boxes that have holes in them so you can see each roll - at least the end of the roll anyway.

I think if that happened to me my head would fly off and roll down the street......the skunking, however, is a regular occurrence. How'd ya like to go through sev boxes of nickels and get nothing but common date jeffs - no semi keys, proofs, or war nickels. I'm waiting on $2000 in halves that I ordered from 2 diff banks....and hoping that nobody around here has searched them and that there isn't anyone in the counting room that pulls all the goodies. They are coming from 2 diff companies. Some companies have the place full of cameras and hte employees are not allowed to do anything of that sort.

That really does suck! I hope your next boxes has a bit of silver in it to cover your loss.

Searched two boxes of halves today and went to 6 banks looking for additional halves.
    Box 1: shutout
    Box 2: 03, 04, and one 1967
Banks: only about 7 dollars in halves with one clad 1976s proof.

Gypsy: I always open the box in front of the teller now so I don't get shorted. I recommended it.

    QUESTION:

I've seen several people here mention that they found a 1969 s Cents. WHY? They made 544 million of them. Why do some mention it as if it is a nice find? I know there is a rare DDO for that date, but that is not what people are saying they found.

    Am I missing something?

    thanks

Bob, I think some people just operate under the assumption that S mintmarks are hard to find, and therefore special. I used to keep S Mint pennies, but I found so many that after I had a roll, I just started throwing them in the copper bin.

Pickin's seem to have gotten slim, Erin. It almost makes me wish silver would drop back down into the single digits. Maybe then the coins would be easier to find...

I'm officially a coin nerd, just completed my first roll search on four rolls of pennies. Found two wheaties. I was too excited to find a 1942!!! (The oldest I've found so far) Every other roll is a really great average. Hopefully DH can score some more good rolls for me. Waaahooo!!

Did you know that they made from 1909-1981 for lincoln cents a total of nearly 156 Billion Cents with 95% copper

Thats $3 billion to be made then!
Well I dont think they will melt wheaties thouhg.
And if anything I think mexican and canadian coinage shall become attractive to melt.

Anyways this liqour store owner called me and had $40 worth of halves he wanted cash for. And hwile I have done this about 5 times with him I had only found 1 40%.
in the $40 he gave me I found
    2 1962 Franklins
    1 1964 Kenendy
    1 1968 Kennedy
    1 1969 Kennedy

    3 90 and 2 40
    Not bad for a sunday.
Also regarding S fever, I just prefer S cents. I live in SF so I feel theyre important to me, plus my grandpa had one of those 1969-s DDO that was confasticated and we never got it back... We presume it was destroyed.
So for me its part of my heritage and family roots. And I shall continue to ocllect them.

    Great finds.

Why was the 69s DDO "confiscated?" Is there a story I don't know about?

I grabbed $99 worth of half-dollars at lunch today - no silver. Took them to the bank with the free counting machine after work. Teller had to change the half-dollar bag while I was there, and he gave me some rejects that I guess were inside the machine. Turned out to be 3 silver dimes (52, 63, 63), a 2002 1 Euro with German reverse and what looks like a replica 1967 British half-penny made into a necklace charm. So my day of searching turned out OK after all...Jeff
