Look! I think I see Mint Error collector Joe Cronin from the Cointalk forum is on a quarter! I swear to GOD that looks exactly like him!!! It's gotta be genuine!!!
I bought a hot dog at a coin show. It had these long "S", "5" and "8" marks all over it in red and yellow. Should I have sent it in to Ball Park for a manufacturing error or just ate it like I did?
Sorry to hear about the cancer, it is a terrible disease, I hope that your recovery is 100%. But, about the coin if you want to believe it is a 5. Then you have every right. The fact of it is, that it is what is called a "struck through debris". Post #88 was made by an unrefuted expert in errors. These type of errors are usually short lived, depending on how long the debris was stuck to the die. If this so called 5 was part of the die when made it would be seen thru out the dies life. This is not the case, the struck thru will only be seen in a certain die state, and cannot be used as a die marker for a variety. Theory's aren't needed here, the answers you get are based off an accumulated knowledge of the minting process. Stick around, you will learn a lot more about the minting process, and why errors and variety's happen than visiting any you tube channel.
I think I found a rare mint error from 1956 - Abe wearing a top hat and facing forward - very rare and valuable
Gentleman, the coin being referred to in this post has been NICKNAMED the "5 in cheek" dime. It is not considered a true numeral 5. Like the Superbird, Spitting Horse or Bugs Bunny FHD. If my memory serves me correctly the youtube video author even says that it is from lint on the die.
So does lint on the die mean a strike through? If so, the value will be MINIMAL since it's not even a major ST
you can think you have a 5 on there but there is no such coin its 10 cents worth how long have you been collecting I have over 50 years experience
Some people don't really see the 'squiggle' as the variety they claim, they see it as $$$, and there are ignorant buyers on etsy and ebay who do not know the difference. It doesn't look like a 5 unless "My sweet pareidolia It all ends so painfully and slow My pareidolia" Treyarch Sound
If you're going to comment, please take the time to read the entire thread. In post # 88, A renowned error expert classified this as a lint mark on the die (i.e.die damage). In post #97, I agreed with this statement. Once again, it was caused by random die damage, which would mean other examples could have been made and released. It absolutely was not a number 5 stamped on the cheek as claimed in the thread. Hope this clarifies things for you
