Hey all, I don't actually know a ton about paper money yet, but I set aside serial numbers that I like, star notes, etc. I mainly look for radar and star notes, as well as low or high serial numbers. Anyway, I was curious if this 1996 $50 star note is worth holding onto? It's not particularly rare or even in the greatest shape.
That is one thing I was thinking of. I am fine to hold on to it for now, but if I ever need it, it would be one of the first to get spent just since it's a higher denomination. I'm guessing there's not really much value in a non-rare, not great shape $50 star note other than the fact that it's a star note.
Its good for a reference specimen for that year. But, if you keep the note you got $50 tied up with basically 0 chance of value increase.
That is very true... It is a lot to keep tied up, especially if there is pretty much no chance for the value to increase. There are probably much better things to use that $50 for, like coins, stocks, etc.
I have kept bills just like that because I found them interesting. Then months or years later, spend them on something that I found more interesting. I went to the International Paper Money Show once with a shoebox full of 2 dollar bills. One dealer asked if I needed to go through them before spending them. My answer was that I was more interested in what I was buying with them.
Due to the higher serial number and the circulated condition I f do not think there would be much of a premium, if any at all on that bill. Still, I’d keep it if it was mine.
