I've recently run across this coin and can't figure out what it is. Mirror finish like I've never seen (albeit with hazing & spots). Has this thing been chromed or something? Any ideas? I'll also thank you for telling me how to insert/attach a photo here, if that's possible! Until then, I'd be glad to email a rather poor scan. Thanks, Kevin NC
maybe a once upon a time proof? the obverse has some toning at the top. the spoting looks currosive, at least one spot looks like its strarting to rust.
Hi Kevin, and to the forum. That seems to me to be a very possible answer. I know it would create the mirror finish, and would probably be subject to the kind of hazing and spotting we see.
Hi As stated, It cant be a proof coin as it has a Denver ("D") Mintmark. It is probably an early strike from a fairly new set of dies. That would sometimes look like that. Good details and a proof-like appearance. Still not a proof though. Have Fun, Bill
Is the clad layer visible on the reeded edge? There's a spot on the lower left obverse that looks like something has 'puddled' near the rim. Examining those two things should tell if it's been 'dipped' in something, or 'plated', IMO.
