I really love this portrait of Domitian. I was looking for an affordable coin of Domitian and this appeared on MAShops the next day. It seems very lifelike and ultra-Flavian.
Is anyone willing to suggest that the SC on the Divus Augustus IS on the reverse. It depends on how you define reverse. Which side appears to have been the anvil die? Which side shows the more important person? Obverse and reverse are terms used by coin people as they see fit. Is that always a match for the way the issuing authority ranked the pair?
To a newbie like me, the obverse of a coin shows the portrait bust with a legend naming the person pictured, while the reverse shows a full-bodied person or god with more of a "message" in the legend. That's purely observational and not a single bit scholarly.
Great point, this sestertius from the reign of Tiberius fits that same bill. Name and "SC" on the same side - Tiberius 14–37 A.D. sestertius RIC I 48 Asiae Roma Tiberius, laureate, togate, seated, left on curule chair, his feet on stool, holding patera in right hand and long sceptre in left CIVITATIBVS ASIAE RESTITVTIS TI CAESAR DIVI AVG F AVGVST PM TR POT XXIIII Legend surrounding large S C 35.0mm 26.69g
