Possible new variety attribution

Discussion in 'Error Coins' started by William Bailey, Sep 16, 2021.

  1. I bought a few rolls of BU 2009 and 2009D Lincoln cents, "Formative Years" series (from the series of four different reverses of this coin celebrating Lincoln), for which 8 or 9 varieties have been discovered so far. I found 3 known varieties among the rolls and also what I believe is a new variety not listed among known varieties. The coin I have has TWO thumbs on Lincoln's hand: an extra small thumb can clearly be seen at the base of and on top of the normal longer thumb. I have inquired with Wexler and with CONECA and have been told that Lincoln cents are not being attributed at this time, so I have to wait until attribution opens again for Lincoln cents to have it evaluated and hopefully attributed as a new variety. (Sorry for the poor pics, but this is the best I can do at this time.)

Sorry but IMO it is the light playing off the contours of the thumb. But I have only those images to go by not the coin in hand

I read somewhere that there are so many thumb varieties. It could be a plating issue IMHO.

Yeah, above the thumb, on the book…appears to maybe be a plating blister. Not seeing 2 thumbs. OP, please post clearer pictures, these are out of focus and badly illuminated…imo…Spark

@William Bailey I cannot tell from your photos what variety this might be. But I do know that WDDR-009 has a die chip on the top of the book. This is a Stage C of the same coin. You mention 8 or 9 varieties but there are close to or more than 200 across all of the Formative Years issue, including P,D, and Satin Finish coins. Try checking yours to John Wexler's site at www.doubleddie.com.

  9. Tommyc03 - Thanks for your response. I've checked all of the known varieties on Wexler's site as well as on VarietyVista, and do not find the one I have. So I'll just patiently wait until variety attributions open again for Lincoln cents and submit it for examination, verification, and hopefully it's designation as a new variety.
