A gentleman is offering this coin for sale. My knowledge is limited on this coin so I did some digging. Saw that if it's real and worth 1000's of dollars or most likely fake and worth zero. I also saw that there were some restrikes that have some value. Thoughts? Opinions? Thanks.

Its a later copy. There were I beleive only 4 originals made, but later on they took the reverse die and struck it into 1861 dated dollars. These restrikes always have flattened obverses, since the strike on the reverse flattened them.

Yours is not an original, and not one of these "original restrikes", but appears to be a cast copy made much later.

I agree first thing I see when looking at it is a cast copy.

Yes, it is definitely a copy, and not original. It isn't counterfeit, as it is a reproduction, and not intended to fool anybody--it is cast and crudely made.

They produced them in the 60's for the 100 year anniversary of the Civil War.

And after as tourist novelties, along with CSA cents and a plethora of other painfully cheesy kitsch, particularly in Gettysburg. Perhaps things have changed - I know it was heading in the right direction 17-18 years ago - but the Gettysburg-as-Disneyland of decades ago was disgraceful. The battlefields of north-central Virginia, particularly in the Fredericksburg area, even with the encroaching development and land loss, offered a superior experience IMO, but I digress...

    Hint:

The damaged area in the center was where the word "copy" was.

I know a guy that found a real one once. He paid like $150. From an estate seller that didn’t know if it was real or not. This one: I’ve been trying to buy it off of him for a while.

Thanks—I know nothing about coins. And just realized this one sticks to a magnet—so definitely a fake. Thanks again!

Absolutely terrible copy, the T to the right of the date was to indicate it was a "toy" coin.
