    Nice pickup!

I picked this piece up at CNG. I liked all of the detail on such a small coin and the geometric pattern on the reverse. I've been after something under a gram with nice metal, sharp features and good style and this was perfect. I paid up, but it will be a great addition to my collection. The pictures don't do the coin justice in comparison to the video CNG posted:

IONIA, Magnesia ad Maeandrum. Circa 400-350 BC. AR Trihemiobol (9mm, 0.83 g, 6h). Helmeted head of Athena right / Trident within circular maeander pattern. SNG Kayhan 405–7; SNG von Aulock 2032. Attractive iridescent tone, a few marks. Good VF. Well centered and fine style.

Thanks! My wins have been minimal this year since prices skyrocketed and I've overpaid for each ancient I've bought except for 1 or 2. But I've gotten some good deals on world coins- so its ok I guess.

It was hard to justify the prices people were willing to pay, especially for the Jewish & Kushan coins . I did bid on 13 coins & managed to win 1 coin below estimate :woot:

Amazing little coin/ love those videos/ really shows coins detail. Your coin would have gone really high if it had been slabbed/ instead of VF+ it would have graded CH-AU 5/5 5/5. In past I have seen CNG EF coins reslabbed as MS-GEM 66/65s! CNG EF= NGC MS-64-66. Kunker had a coin graded as Vorz. (EF) but also listed it as US slabbed MS-65.

John, After reviewing the auction results, there were some excellent buys in the Ancient Greek coins . It appears that the "slab lunacy :wacky:" has hit CNG too. The Owl pictured below, lot #187, NGC Ch MS, Strike 5/5, Surface 5/5, Fine Style, hammered for $5,500 :jawdrop:!

    CNG 118, 187_2.jpg

The next lot #188 was an Owl of equal quality with more crest showing that hammered for $1,500. So figure that one out o_O...

    CNG 118, 188_2.jpg

The coin pictured below put me in a state of shock , lot #446. Notice the size & weight of this hideous coin.

    CNG 118, 446_2.jpg
SAMARIA, Middle Levantine Series, c. 375-333 BC. AR Tetartemorion: 7.5 mm, 0.11 gm. Obverse: Bearded janiform head. Reverse: Pile of 5 Athenian Owls ? Estimate $300, hammer price $3,750 :jawdrop:!

    Congrats @panzerman !
Prices were pretty strong across the greek section, with more than a few absurd hammers, at least for silver in the first couple hundred lots. After a few initial setbacks however I managed to walk away with a coin I'm very happy with, and at a price that I can't complain about too much.

    Oitaioi Hemidrachm (360-344 BC).jpg

THESSALY, Oitaioi. Circa 360-344 BC. AR Hemidrachm (14mm, 2.61 g, 5h). Head of lion left, with spear in jaws / Herakles standing facing, holding club. Valassiadis 1; BCD Thessaly II 487; HGC 4, 129. Deeply toned, scratch and nick on reverse. VF.

From the Sigmund Collection. Ex BCD Collection (Classical Numismatic Group Electronic Auction 380, 10 August 2016), lot 143; Sotheby’s (27 March 1987), lot 395 (part of).

I bid on 6 coins and won 1. The items of my interest didn't seem to be bringing crazy prices but I did have to pay about 4 times the estimate to win this. That said, the estimate was unrealistically low.

I got skunked. Though the auction appeared to be not doing that well during the weeks proceeding it certainly made up for it the day before. At least two coins went over my limit at that point and i dropped a number of others because of less than stellar revues. That left two. 4-3958X3.jpg Demetrios II Tetradrachm second reign. This coin belonged to Jay Galst a man who I thought very highly of and this coin was one of the few where my collection and his intersected. I got ready to bid and.... the damned portal crashed just long enough for that coin to be sold.:banghead::banghead::banghead:( extremely vile expletives deleted:mad: ) I phoned CNG immediately but nothing could be done.
Second coin was this one 4-395A4N.jpg Gordian III Ar Denarius Nothin special but I liked it. Given my experience with the live bidding I decided about 20 minutes before to place my max bid. Then I watched as the bidding went up to and then passed my max. I guess it was not my day. :(

Some targets I abandoned early, for some I could not even place a bid as I was pressing the bid button but my bids were already outdated. For the few coins I managed to bid, I lost, except for one.

As @Al Kowsky said, the prices for owls were a bit strange. I was puzzled that I got this coin for a 1600$ hammer. Maybe the photo is not good enough as there is a shady area below Athena's jaw, but there was a video in which the coin looks much better. Are the edge splits discouraging some collectors? There is some die wear mainly in the area of the neck guard, however, the crest is quite good. I would welcome any opinions on this, otherwise it will remain a mystery to me.

On the classification side, the owl's head is leaning to the back, meaning that the coin probably falls in the short period between Starr V and mass coinage.

pprp, I'm not an expert on Owls but your coin looks like a nice one to me & the price seems fair . I only have one Owl that cost me $700 a few years ago pictured below :D.

Some nice coins in this thread, but, for me, the Wolfenbüttel Taler takes the cake. @Chris B fantastic purchase

I was successful with 3 coins out of 14 I was planning to bid on. I was very surprised by absolutely ridiculous 2500 hammer on very common Bostra drachm that typically sold in group lots these days. All 3 coins I got ended up very reasonably, I am particularly happy with very rare Adraa sestertius of Commodus:
