As lockdown continues in Melbourne, I've spent my time upgrading my late Roman coins. My latest upgrade is Zeno. I've acquired a taste for Roman gold! Here's the old one: Bronze Nummus Constantinople Obverse: Pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right. Reverse: Monogram of Zeno Reference: RIC X 958 And here's the new one: Zeno, second reign Gold solidus Constantinople Obverse: D N ZENO PERP AVG. Armoured bust facing VICTORIA AVGGGS. Victory holding a long beaded cross. Star in the field; CONOB RIC 929 Edited
Loving the way you upgrade me man! That's a wonderful facing portrait Sadly, I sold my Zeno when I got rid of most of my LLRBs (late late Roman bronzes). But am rethinking my love of Byzantine coinage in gold
Nice one! I also started with a monogram AE4 Then upgraded to a tremissis Which I sold to buy this solidus Unsolicited advice - you'd probably be better off either consigning the AE or just keeping it - the ebay market for monogram AE4s is extremely weak. You'd probably get $10 or less for it.
Loving the progressive upgrades! And yes, i think you're right about the eBay market for monogram AE4s! My Val III AE4 looks like it will hammer very low. When it comes time to dispose of my Libius Severus / Ricimer, I'll look elsewhere. This raises a good topic - where is the best place to sell? Last time i wrote to CNG and Roma, I wasn't happy with the deal: they take fees from both buyer and seller, plus photography fees - which makes these pretty unappealing venues for disposing of lower end coins.
Nice upgrade! And I agree with @Finn235 - I'm trying to sell a monogrammed Marcian and I'm down to $6 but it now with no bites.
There is currently a 'nicer' Zeno AE4 on eBay which only has one fault. It appears to be as fake as the other coins offered by that seller. Yours might sell if there is anyone out there that would prefer a real one.
Of course a great upgrade. My only Zeno. Zeno (476 - 491 A.D.) Æ4 O: Pearl-diademed, draped bust right. R: Monogram Constantinople mint 14mm .89g Cf. RIC X 958
@GregH That's a beautiful Zeno gold coin. Another excellent upgrade, of a very late Roman coin, from bronze to gold. It's interesting, that Zeno was the Eastern Roman Emperor, when the Western Roman Empire fell. And there was only ever 1 Zeno. No Zeno II, Zeno III, etc. Nice flan, excellent portrait of Zeno, excellent portrait of Victory who looks like an angel, excellent strike, excellent condition, and a nice tone.
