Getting a set of franklins. I know they run some money. How much luck do you think if I brought mint sets and look thur them? Another question I seen unopen mint set from the 50's go for pretty cheap. Is there such a thing? I often heard that mint set and proof set, were never sealed. thanks
Are you getting a complete set or are you going to BUILD a complete set? Seen many Franklins with weak BL's and overall soft strikes. Took me 4 years to build my set excl. Proof's and varieties. Many have already been broken out of Mint Sets and Proof sets hoping they can slabbed at least MS-64 with FBL's. It all depends how fast or slow you want to collect these underated halves. Good luck!!
I've bought 4 mint sets on ebay and yes they are real. Whether they came from the US mint sealed or not has been debatable time and time again here on this forum. Also, whether sellers buy new envelopes and place funky mint sets for sale has been mentioned as well. These sets don't cost that much even at coin shows. If someone will go thru all that trouble to make less than $30 I don't know, but I don't think so. I received mine sealed, and I've been very happy with my buys. After sitting around for 40yrs + they are gonna be sealed, that's what I think. I have been happy with my sets all of them, and I would buy again. :high5:
I speak with some knowledge of FBLs - searching mint sets will probably not get you very far. They are however the best place to look for FBL's raw. Searching mint sets for a FBL franklin set will probably lead to financial ruin - most sets have already been searched, even the so-called unopened ones. You especially have to know which dates come better struck, and are more likely to have FBL's (although, these dates will also be the ones with the lowest premiums). The number of raw Franklin's you have to look through to get just one with FBL's means that your success rate will be incredibly low - you are far better served just buying them already slabbed. For some dates, you could look through a hundred or more before finding one that might be FBL. I highly recommend a Franklin set - see mine in my sig line below. They can be a fun, interesting, and challenging set if done correctly.
Mint set toned I colect Franklins too, and have almost full set of slabed PF & MS NGC,PCGS I have quite a few MS65 FBL's but also just MS65 . ,but I like them raw too.Mint set toned are Great .When buying raw "GEMs" they could claim to be MS64 or MS65,or claimed to be FBL or someone may not know what they are talking about .They could also could have been cleaned and you could not be able to tell form the a picture . Good Luck
I just purchased a 1959 mint set from a local dealer because it had a Type B reverse Washington quarter in it. The P Franklin was not that well struck and also had some toning, but the D Franklin looks like at least a 64 or 65 FBL. I think the mint sets are hit or miss, and as mentioned above many have been searched but you never know what you might find. TC
No more likley to find FBL and much more toning in mint sets. No more likley to find FBL and much more toning in mint sets.
