Best answer yet. For sure there is an S there but if you put it up on ebay and let them fight over it, then no big thing anyway.
You guys are great! I'm going to shoot a better pic with my coin microscope and post is later. More to follow. I hate to waste the $ to grade it if it's an S. I'd hate to sell it on eBay if it's a D. I think it's an S.
From what I can tell. It's a "S", because of the curve at the left. If a "D" the top would be flat. Sorry. -O)
IF there is a mintmark it is definitely an S and not a D. If that is a D then I am Bigfoot. I Think it would be really shady to put that on Fleabay as an "unknown mintmark"... especially if it goes for more then $1. Judging by the condition it can't have much more then $.75 worth of silver left on it
Yes, it would be a big mistake to place that dime on feebay as that would be plain sleazy and you don't want to get caught up in that krap. If your dime had a "D" mintmark it would have to be sideways. Nice try but that dog don't hunt!!
I'm not saying I'd list it on eBay personally (I wouldn't), but I take your comment to mean that you consider that particular tactic sleazy. And, since I first mentioned it, I'm not sure I care for your inference. There is nothing ethically wrong with posting that coin on eBay as an unknown mintmark. As long as the pictures are not intentionally deceitful, and as long as they're not tampered with, every potentially bidder will have as complete of an information set as possible, and all potential bidders will share the same set of information. That is not against numismatic ethics. For all you know, there is some super-student of Mercury dime dies out there who knows for certain this is a 1916-D, and can prove it, and who will pick up the coin for a song. On the other hand, if all buyers are reasonable (and it's their own responsibility to be), then the coin will bring only the silver value, nothing more. From an ethical standpoint, there is absolutely nothing wrong with my suggestion.
I'd have to go with an S too, top is too rounded for a D. Do you have any pics of an S to compare like you did the D?
