I don't know much about this coin - it's been in my collection for a very long time. I was looking it up in Krause and I noticed their are four types of this year. I don't see any evidence of an 8, so I can narrow it down to 3 types.

I don't see any signs of doubling, but the 9 is significantly lower than the rest of the date - but that may be just how the punch is for all examples.. I just plain don't know. So, what have I got here? Anyone know?

I'm going to say it's the narrow nine variety.I would grade it VF-20 which would make it worth about $8.00 CDN

hey not bad... I picked up this and three more along with a 25 cent netherlands piece from 1848 for a buck at an auction 4 or 5 years ago.

    Thanks for the info Bromac!

Rick, there was also a large 1c. from Canada dated 1858.This is far rarer than the 1859.The portrait on the 1858 & 1859 1c. coins is very different from the 1876-1901 issue,as the latter issue's portrait has the Queen's head crowned. This issue has a wreath. The
1858-59 coinage is affectionately known as the 'Province of Canada' coinage,as opposed to the 1870-1901 'Dominion of Canada' coinage.

n9 probably means Narrow 9, The VF+5 is the grade.

1859 Narrow 9, Graded Very Fine (the plus 5 doesnt compute for me though, possibly they are saying its a nice VF but not quite the next higher grade?)

Canada was Quebec and Ontario prior to 1867.
